Evelyn peeked out of her bedroom door. Through the little crack, she saw her father yelling and waving his arms around. She heard her mothers voice shout back. Evelyn turned to read the clock: 1:37 A.M.
Dad must have come home late, she thought. Possibly drunk.
She tiptoed back into her bed and folded the fluffy white blanket over her. She rolled over on her side and tucked her arm under her head so her elbow was jutting out. When Evelyn was lost in thought, the doorknob turned. She forced her eyes shut, relaxed, and pretended to sleep. The sound of footsteps and carpet being squished was heard throughout the room.
"Evelyn?" a feminine voice whispered.
It sounded like her mother. Evelyn was so deep in thought that she forgot about the shouting.
She turned and whispered, "Hm?"
"Ah, nothing. Just checking to see if you were asleep," her mother smiled.
Evelyn's mother, Rose, was an amazing woman. She was loyal, confident, repectful, honest and the list could've gone on. Her shoulder-length brown hair matched her eyes and she had a warming smile that just makes you wanna give a random six year-old a cookie.
Rose turned to leave. "Goodnight, honey."
"'Night, Mom."
Evelyn layed in bed and sighed. She stared up at her ceiling, which had small glow-in-the-dark stars stuck onto it. Her eyes eventually began to droop and she fell asleep.
* * *
The alarm went off and Evelyn's eyes snapped open. She groaned and smacked the snooze button on her alarm with her fist. The clock read 6:50 A.M. After staying in bed for a minute, she got up, rubbed the sleep out of her eyes and stepped into her bathroom.
She stood in front of the sink and studied her reflection in the mirror. Her jet black hair was sticking up, her eyes were still drooping from sleep, and her pajamas were rumpled. She grabbed her toothbrush, squeezed some toothpaste on it, and brushed her teeth. After rinsing her mouth, she peeled off her clothes and hopped into the shower.
Evelyn turned the knob to a cold setting and the icy water jolted her awake. She turned the water to a comfortable temperature and rinsed her hair and body. She reached for a towel and dried off. She went back to her room to grab a dark purple tank top, black skinny jeans, black sneakers, and her grey zip-up hoodie.
Once she put her clothes on, Evelyn stood in front of the bathroom mirror and grabbed her eyeliner. Her mother allowed her to wear make-up, so it wasn't a big deal since she only wore a little bit. She rested her elbow on the counter and applied her make up. All she did was a small flick at the end. It wasn't too crazy, just noticable. After that she rubbed tinted lip balm on her lips and pressed them together. She grabbed a brush and started brushing her hair until she heard her bedroom door open.
"Evelyn!" her father's voice called.
"Yes, Dad?" she called back.
"Are you almost ready?" he asked.
"Yeah, just gotta brush my hair and get my bag," she yelled. "I'll be down in two minutes!"
"Okay!"
After sweeping her hair over her right shoulder, Evelyn left the bathroom and grabbed her bag from her desk chair. She slipped her digital watch on and took a glance at the laptop on the desk and was itching to open it. She slung it over her left shoulder and left the room. When she went downstairs, her dad, Ian, seemed in a happier mood. Ever since her sister Evangeline died, he had started heavily drinking. He started coming home late and her mom would demand to ask were he was.
Evelyn's mom was standing at the sink and her father was by her side, his arms around her waist. They were both happy and Evelyn smiled.
"'Morning, Eve," her mother greeted warmly.
She smiled at that too. Eve was her nickname and she loved it. "'Morning, Mom."
Evelyn put her bag down by her chair and grabbed a box of Lucky Charms from the cupboard. She poured it into a bowl and put the box back. She grabbed the milk from the fridge and poured it into the bowl.
"Did you sleep well?" her mother asked.
"Yeah," Evelyn lied.
That wasn't true at all. Evelyn had barely gotten any sleep. By the time she did, it was 3 A.M. She plopped a spoon into her bowl and sat down at the table. She checked her watch. 7:25. She finished eating her breakfast and slung her bag over her left shoulder again. Evelyn gave her mom and dad a hug.
"Bye, Mom. Bye, Dad."
"Bye, honey," her mom said.
"Bye, Evelyn," her dad said. "Remember, whatever you do, do not go to a Coven meeting."
"I know," she nodded.
She swung open the door and left. The cool fall air blew her hair out of her face. She shivered despite her sweater. The walk to school took about five minutes and Evelyn was on her phone the whole time. By the time Evelyn had gotten there, students had just started going inside. She mixed in with the crowd and managed to walk to her locker.
She spun in her combination: 36-30-25. Evelyn swung open her locker and stuffed the books she didn't need yet inside.
"Rosario," a voice called.
She turned and saw Selene Miranda, her least favorite person.
"What?" Evelyn snapped.
"Oh, nothing. How's Evangeline?" Selene asked. "Oh, that's right. She died two days ago."
You have the nerve, you little scumbag, she thought.
"Shut up," she ordered. "Although, with all that make up caked on, you could probably withstand my insults."
Selene stood there, her face filled with shock. Evelyn purposely bumped shoulders with her as she headed to her Spanish class.
She nearly screeched when someone demanded, "Where were you?"
