The Night Out

MAI-U-MI KA-RY-AN

MAIUMI KARYAN WALLACE

"MK"

SATIVA by Jhene Aiko played through the speaker as MK happily danced around the kitchen preparing herself breakfast. She cleaned the previous dishes before turning towards her waffle maker.

Why you make it so complicated
Why you make it so complicated
Off the drink we concentrated
I know you won't leave me hangin'
Smokin' weed out the container

Maiumi flipped the waffle over onto her plate as the stream hit her open pores giving off a heat flush. She washed the waffle maker rinsing it then setting it aside along the rest of the dishes she'd previously used.

Grandmama always taught to clean as you go.

Unless you have children, then there is your dishwasher.

For this 22 year old, her life right now consists of living and working. No boyfriend, one backbone she calls mimi, two bestfriend's and an annoying boss that couldn't have his way. Other than that, life's simply simple.

Looking over the food, she smiled getting ready to feast before her music stopped and instead the ringtone sounded throughout the room. Skipping over towards the charging phone, she unhooked it from the cable lighting, pressing the green icon.

One day you slide to answer, next it's the green icons.

"Good Morning Sun Ray !"

One the phone, one of her bestfriend since middle school, Darryn. Maiumi and Darryn are hip stuck. Anywhere one went the other wasn't to far behind. They're stuck together like superglue.

They called it: The Sisterhood from Different Mothers.

"Morning Ryn." She laughed. "That name is still stuck on your frontal as it was in middle school. When are you letting it go?"

They shared a laugh. Maiumi love the name Sun Ray as it fits her in many ways. One her middle name is Karyan, and the other as her being born in Maimi. Up as the sun comes out and sweet as a Stingray.

"Ugh never. That's your name ma'am and your sticking to it. Now, good thing I didn't stop for breakfast because I can smell the food through the phone." Darryn groaned.

MK laughed again. Honestly, sometimes she didn't know what to do with Darryn. She loved her regardless without Judgement. 10 years later and the friendship is holding on.

"Open the door, I have a lot." Darryn announced before hanging up. Walking to the intercom, she pressed the button buzzing her in and up.

Heating up the food a little, she continued to eat hers as she waited for the sound of Darryn at the door. Hearing the rattling sound of bags, she opened the door, revealing her beautiful childhood friend.

Maiumi grabbed the box from out her hands, setting it aside as Darryn put the bags down. Both looking at each other as they held that look. It was a language for them in their own way. After a few seconds, Darryn screamed loudly,

"HAPPY MOTHERFUCKING BIRTHDAY !"

Maiumi jumped being caught off-guard but the big butterfly smile on her face casted her beating heart.

She totally forgot her own birthday

"Aww thank you babe." Ryan beamed not wanting to give off how she didn't even remember her own birthday.

It was Maiumi's 22nd birthday She's been working so much, that normally she'd have a countdown going on to get her in the mood for her birthday week that she forgot to set it up this year.

"Mai, you forgot your own birthday didn't you?"

"What? No of course not. How could I do that." She laughed lying.

The look Darryn was giving let her know that she knew her better than that.

"Yes ya did. You're trying to convince yourself."

Birthday's was something to look forward to for her because it was a milestone to turn a different age and be here another year as young adults her age are being killed, or thrown in prison.

This year was different however.

MK recently lost her dad. He was her everything. Being a daddy's girl, her father was her bestfriend and more in one. Losing him, took her life to another part of her that she sometimes didn't recognize but got up everyday to not let that side of her show much.

It's been almost a year since the passing but it stills effects her that he's not here to talk or hug her.

"There's more to come. Now, this is for you. It's for tonight so don't open it as of yet. You'll love it, just don't kill me."

Maiumi laughed once again not knowing what she was going to do with Darryn.

To someone looking in, they'll probably say she's so comical and always bright but will never know what's going on behind her smiles and jokes.
