I never knew how much shit a girl could acquire over a 20 year period. Even if, I am the one who built up this amount. I believed i needed it all for life at college. Half of it is Christmas presents from mom, as she believes i'm basically moving into a whole new house that is bigger then the actual shared cubical I will be inhabiting.
I make it in the door, with the use of my foot to turn the handle, just to come face to face with my new roomie. She looked shocked to see me bust through the door. Which would make sense if this isn't the fourth time i've come through this door lugging all my shit.
"Hi" she says to me smiling once the shock has passed. She must have just gotten here and saw all my things thrown around on my side of the room. Now you would think i'd try and make a good impression on her since i will be living by her side for a while, but sadly my arms are killing me carrying this box and she is blocking the entrance. So my oh so sweet and resourceful mind said it would be a smart idea to push the box i'm holding into her arms so that mine can have a break. And that is exactly what i did.
"Hey, could you hold this for me real quick?" Without a chance to answer the box was already delivered. I shake out my arms a little as she stares at me and then the box trying to readjust to its weight. I can tell she is quite weak and the box is growing to be to much for her so i make my introduction short and sweet.
"Hi, My name is Serenity. This is my first year at a university, but my 3rd year in college. It is very nice to meet you. I hope we can get along" Then to end my bravado moment i take the box from her then motion her a little with my head to move out the door way. She moves to the side and I walk the box over to the desk and set it down. The box honestly wasn't massively heavy for me but it was that weird box shape that was hard to carry and jabbed you in the arms. They gave the students trolleys to carry items but this was the last box from my car so i thought it'd be smart just to carry it and let someone else use the trolly. Kind of regret it now.
My roommate turns to look back at me and shoots me a soft smile as she rubs her arms.
"Sorry if i almost killed you there. I just couldn't get in and the box was killing my arms"
"oh no you are alright. From what i could tell, that box is a handful"
"You got that right. Oh and also i didn't catch your name?"
"Oh, pardon me. My name is Riley, Riley Patris"
"Well nice to meet you Riley" I stand up from where i was leaning against the desk and dust off my sweat pants. There was no dust but i tend to do that when i'm nervous. I was very straight forward at the door but when it came time for real conversation i felt very awkward. I will push my self to interact though.
"So how long have you been at this university?" I question. Ask questions when there is nothing interesting to comment on.
"This is my last year of my 4 years at this university. It's kind of sad that i still live in the dorms, but i'm kind of not ready to live on my own despite being 22" She shrugs her shoulders as if it's nothing but i get the feeling i just might be the same way at the end of this all.
"Well if that's the case. You should know the greatest places out here to eat, right?"
"yeah of course!"
I must have found her sweet spot, cause the mention of food had this girl jumping for joy. Like i had just asked her if she wanted all the money i had in my savings account. Not that i have much in the first place.
"Awesome. I'll drive and on the way we can get to know each other better. I need to know if i should keep my distance now or later" I said it all with a smile but i'm being kind of serious. In all honesty she could be racist and voted for Donald Trump. I don't know about other people but that's a no-go for me. I don't care if she looks to be islander, people have done crazier things.
We walk out the building and i make sure to grab my key as i will not be one of the first people locked out their dorm room the first day. I know there is suppose to be a seminar on the ways of dorm life soon for all the new comers but honestly i'll learn what i need to from Riley.
We hop in the car and she gives me directions to the place we are going to eat. Which came after her brief check in that i am not vegetarian or Vegan. I'm pretty open minded with food so i think whatever she picks will be okay. i did find out on the way that she is not a trump supporter and that she is in fact Samoan. In which she asked what i am mixed with as some people tell me my race is hard to depict. I let her know i am black and white with little stems of native and filipino down the family tree.
We soon pull into the parking spot across from where we were eating.
I was still unsure which one it was. There were two small places next to one another; A mexican place and a korean BBQ. We get out the car and Riley practically sprints to the bbq place. I follow behind and we walk inside. I've personally never had korean food but i'm willing to try it. We walk over to a spot without a waiter to seat us.
Attached to the table appeared to be this small grill. I look at it kind of funny and Riley laughed at the face i made.
"I don't know what you got me into but all i know is the food better be good" I say as i tie my big giant curly pink hair on top of my head.
"I promise the food here is super delicious" She says with a smile but she was looking next to me as she said it "And the boy who works here is much more delicious"
Before i can ask who, i hear a voice next to me.
"Are you talking about me again Riley?"
I look behind me to see a asian boy seemingly about 5'7 with pretty teeth smiling at Riley.
She smiles back not embarrassed about the blatant exchange of cheesiness they are passing back and forth. I gag in my mind but smile to keep the peace.
The boy grabs a notepad out his apron and clicks his pen "I told you that you can't keep showing up at my work all the time Riley" He says in a exasperated way tapping his pen on the notepad as he looks up through his lashes at her.
"Well don't work at one of the favorite places to eat and i won't" She says with attitude at full max "plus i got a new roommate today who wanted to know of a great place to eat"
"Oh! so i can be apart of the conversation now?" i said with a slight chuckle so my words don't come off to harsh.
"sorry" Riley says showing that she actually was "Remy this is my roommate Serenity. Serenity this is my boyfriend Remy"
We exchange the basic "nice to meet you's" and then Riley sent Remy on his way with a order of meats and side dishes that i come to find out later are plentiful enough to feed a whole family.
We chat over the food with Riley is making glances at Remy here and there every time he talks to a pretty girl that came in to eat. But i will say i liked the food a lot, even the weird side dishes. Whatever the hell that kimsee stuff was it has a good kick to it with some meat. And i think i'm in love with jap-jap-Japsee? noodles? i don't know, but they were good. grilling it ourselves did throw me off. Like what is the point of the kitchen people if i cook it myself?
