I woke up with a start, my alarm clock breaking the silence that layed like a blanket over me. I get up and stumble through my dark room, regretting just how loud I set it the night before. I hit the button and bask in the moment of peace and quiet for a couple seconds. Wait what time is it? I look to my clock and it displays 7:40 am, good just enough time to get ready and wait for Summer to come pick me up.
I throw on some ripped jeans and a button down. Can't forget my good luck charm, my star shaped locket. My mother gave it to me a while back for a birthday, and I always keep it on me. It reminds me of better times. I grab my backpack from it's hook, checking it has everything in it that I need as I walk downstairs, the smell of eggs assaulting my senses the moment I step in the kitchen. I smile at my mom "good morning." she doesn't respond. She hasn't talked to me in a while. Actually scratch that, she hasn't talked to anyone in a while. I only know that she heard me come down because she shoved a plate in my hands then stomped upstairs and slammed the door. I serve myself some eggs and flop down in my chair. It seems the more I try to interact with my mom the more she pushes me away, I just don't know what else to try.
*BEEP* *BEEP*
a car horn wails from outside my house. that must be Summer, she's the only person I know that would be a public nuisance this early in the morning. I scarf down the rest of my eggs, careful not to choke, then shimmy on my jacket and rush out the door, not bothering to say goodbye.
My thoughts are confirmed when I see Summer sitting in front of our house in her holographic convertible, which she seems to love despite it being so.. loud. But I guess that makes sense for her. " hey are you coming or are you going to stand there and make us late?" "Oh sorry, my head has been in the clouds lately." she shakes her head as I hop in the car.

As we pull up to the school, I see some of the teachers standing outside. "what's going on?" I ask Summer. She looks over at me surprised "don't you know? the gatekeepers decided to come to our school to give everyone a pep talk and tips on how to join their ranks." she finishes with a smile.
Ever since I told her about wanting to become a gatekeeper she's been supportive all the way, always hyping me up and helping me study, but the gatekeepers aren't the saints there made out to be. They keep secrets from us and make the wrong people out to be bad, but they are always excused because they're the powerful ones. They're above the law because they are the law.
After lunch our teachers herd us into the gym, where the gatekeepers are set up. They drone on about how being a gatekeeper takes skill but if you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything. Ya, that's a lie. Anyone who has been reading and studying about them knows just how hard it is to get in.
It's not just about how strong your mind is but also how physically capable you are and even if you're very strong physically and mentally it's still like a game of chance, because that's how the gatekeepers see it, like a game. As the assembly raps up and kids slowly start to trickle out, one of the head gatekeepers stops us.
" I was told that you both want to become gatekeepers? Well I hope you can do it, I wouldn't want you both to get in over your heads now." He says condescendingly.
" I know exactly what i'm getting into sir, and I appreciate your concern but I don't need your input." I bite back, a smile still on my face as I slowly and calmly walk out of the gym, with Summer close behind, apologizing profusely. As we slowly move away from the crowd, Summer pulls me aside "what was that! You can't be rude to those people Lorelei, they make or break your future. Do you even want to become a gatekeeper?!"
I look away from her. She sighs and takes my hands. " Look Lorelei, I just want you to be happy, but I can't help you if you don't tell me what's wrong."
I look back at her and suddenly we're staring at each other. It's silent for a moment before I decide to answer.
I take a deep breath.
"ok." I say, with a small smile. So I spill, I tell her about my brother, why I want to be a gatekeeper, who I am. she's silent, staring at me in shock. I pull my hands out of her's. "I understand if you don't want to be friends anymo-" "No!" she shouts, cutting me off. " I mean no, I would never break off our friendship just because of that. i'm just glad you told me." she exclaimed, rushing forward to give me a hug.
At that moment I was so relieved I almost cried, I was so happy I didn't lose her. " But what are you going to do about getting a mentor now, the chief was our best shot." she questioned as we walked towards our last class. I stopped, the gravity of what I just did hitting me.
How are we going to find a mentor now!
