September 7th 1971
The grounds were almost empty when he arrived through the iron gates
Remus Lupin looked around the exposed grassy area the school provided. It was much bigger than he anticipated, a familiar swell of anxiety pooling in his gut. Still, he managed to notice a girl kneeling down by the huge lake in the center of the grounds, her jet black hair ending at the bottom of her black skirt as she crouched, seemingly engrossed in whatever was swimming inside the gigantic, mossy lake.
"what're you looking at?" he asked, kneeling down next to the girl and trying to spot what the girl's silver eyes were watching with so much enthusiasm. She jumped and wobbled on the tips of her toes, her hair dipping into the clear water as she stumbled forward.
and into the shallows.
...
He'd followed the girl around the rest of the morning, apologizing loudly and wincing when eventually, she snapped at him,
"What is your problem?" she asked, glaring at him intensely, "you've already pushed me into the school pond! what else do you want?" he stared at her slightly red face.
"I wanted to apologize for- Hey! I didn't push you!"
"You've done nothing but apologize all morning, I'm going to be late to the sorting." she muttered, ignoring his protests. he sighed,
"I'm sorry for scaring you..." he tried, gripping her hands in his own like mother had taught him to when apologizing. She grimaced slightly and pulled them back, wiping her palm on her new, drier skirt."It's a bit late for that now, idiot..." she stated, flipping her hair over her shoulder. Remus couldn't help but take notice her appearance. She was small and thin. Her long black hair untamed as if she'd not brushed it in weeks, frizzing around her sharp cheekbones and metallic silver eyes like small, ebony fireworks.
"I said sorry. what else do you want?" he responded, irritation slowly gnawing at the back of his mind , "I helped you out of it as well!"she sighed and turned her back to him, once again flicking her hair,
"stop talking to me, mother says I shouldn't talk to people like you." His head snapped up, a glare etched into his usually soft face,
"what's that supposed to mean?" he snapped, his amber eyes alluding to his growing frustration with this obviously spoilt brat. She snickered and looked over her shoulder,
"You heard me. Mother doesn't like me conversing with commoners." Remus' heart almost stopped, the frustration that'd been scraping away at his mind suddenly dispersing into confusion."what's the matter? cat got your tongue?" she teased, her expression of disdain replaced by a cheeky, toothy smile. He growled and turned away from her, "fine, be that way, no skin off my back." She turned to strut off again, humming triumphantly to herself.
"Wait!" he called, catching her attention once again, "I'm...Remus, by the way." she snickered and flipped her hair again.
"Ursa. Ursa Black. Maybe I'll see you around, Remus." and with a final spin on her heel, she disappeared into the castle that would be their new home for the next six years.
Remus sighed. He wasn't sure he could do this.
...
This chapter is shorter than I would like, honestly.. But I thought I'd give writing another go, so I'll see how this part goes down and if it does well, future chapters will be longer and regularly updated!
