Bella's room was dark with only a thin strip of moonlight making it past her curtains. Despite how late it was, she couldn't find it in herself to sleep. The familiar feeling of being watched overcast her and a small smile made its way into her lips.
"Are you going to stand in the corner all night or are you going to say sorry for disturbing my already fragile sleep schedule?"
Not hearing a response she frowned slightly, wondering if she was so tired she had begun speaking to an imaginary Edward. Feeling stupid from a lack of response she made her way out of her bed, the cold floor waking her up with shock. Walking towards the dark corner of her room her heart rate picked up with fear.
A breath of relief left her as she saw the familiar silhouette of a tall male. Although she recognised Edward, the lingering feeling of dread still followed her.
She stood in front of the dark silhouette, eyes adjusting to the darkness and able to recognize the sharp jawline, pale skin and amber eyes. She hugged Edward, feeling self conscious when he didn't return the hug. Drawing away from him she waited for him to talk
"I don't love you anymore, Bella."
The words slipped out of his mouth before he could stop them, the weight of the words hanging heavily in the air. Edward winced as he watched Bella's face scrunch in confusion. Her eyes held disbelief and soon she found it in herself to stutter a response.
"Don't be silly Edward. W-we are perfect together, you were going to expose yourself as a vampire to the world when you thought I had died!"
The words left Bella in a rushed anger, disbelief lacing every word. Edward looked at her, really looked. It had occurred to him before, but now it was as clear as day. Their dependency on one another was unnatural, but not a good unnatural - it was the type of obsession that had stopped them from improving and progressing. He was right, she was like a drug made specifically for him. But no matter how addictive and amazing she seemed in the beginning, like all drugs he was losing himself the more he was with her. He missed the days he could just sit at the piano and play, he missed the days where he spent more time with his family than chasing after a mortal girl.
"We aren't good together. This relationship is toxic. What started as a fascination... It's become so much, too much."
Bella continued to stare, her hair whipping into her face but her eyes never leaving Edwards. She tried to think about their relationship, think about what Edward could be unsatisfied with enough to say something this absurd.
"It's because I'm a human... Isn't it? You think that it's pitiful to be pining after a human? I already said that you could change me!"
"No-"
Edward was cut off abruptly by Bella as she tried to shove his chest in anger. Although the shove did not affect him, he took a step back trying to examine the crazy girl in front of him.
"Yes it is! How did I not see the signs before! I love you Edward, and I want to be with you forever!"
Edward's eyes widened in shock, realizing the full extent of a vampire giving a mortal attention. This obsession was going too far. The kind and awkward girl he had known in the past was gone completely and what stood in the place was nothing more than a shell of the girl he had loved.
"It's over. We've decided to move, we've already stayed longer than we should have."
As he spoke, he watched Bella. The way she responded looked as if every breath was causing her pain. Resolution settled in her eyes and Edward felt a feeling of dread overcome him.
"Make me a vampire, I could go with all of you... I can be with you... I can -"
Bella sobbed heavily, tears falling quietly from her eyes testifying of the heartbreak she was feeling.
Edward restrained himself from hugging her and wiping away her tears. Despite not loving her, it still pained him to see her cry. But he couldn't show any pity or remorse, if he caved then Bella would get the wrong impression.
"You're not in love with me. You're in love with the idea of me, you only see me as an attractive and rich vampire who paid attention to the awkward new girl. You're in love with my world, not me."
His words were harsh, but deep down he knew they were true. Judging be her reaction he knew she knew it was true. The way she jerked back in shock was enough proof for Edward's theory to become fact.
"N-no, I saved you. I'm not just another girl, I'm..."
The words left Bella as she looked at Edward and considered what he was saying.
"My God... Edward what have I become? I was... I am willing to change my entire self to be with you. Isn't that love?"
Bella felt so lost, trying to remember why she loved Edward and coming up with a blank. She thought about how he had glittered in the sun and how her breath had caught in her throat, how special she had felt when she had discovered he was a vampire. The way she felt victorious when she caught Edward standing at the end of her bead.
That wasn't normal. Anyone else and she would have screamed, maybe even try to attack them. 'Surely our relationship hadn't been that bad?'
And then Bella remembered when Edward left and she had become an adrenaline junkie, risking her life an in an attempt to see Edward. She remembered how he had nearly died on multiple occasions in an attempt to save, how she was slowly destroying Edward's family, driving them apart.
After a few minutes of silence, Bella had seen the truth in his words. She wasn't in love with Edward, if he had looked any different or had not been a vampire she would have filed a restraining order on him.
"I don't know."
Bella signed in defeat, suddenly feeling very vulnerable and awake for the first time in years.
Edward had also felt ashamed when he had reflected on his actions, recognizing that he was - if not borderline- abusive. The way he had been so controlling of Bella, watching her sleep and stalking her.
"It would be best if you tried to pretend everything that happened was a bad dream."
Edward's voice was slightly strained. Nothing that had happened was good or had made him happy when remembering. The past few years were a nightmare.
"Are you sure this, whatever we have, wouldn't work if we just tried for a few more weeks?"
Bella voiced hesitantly, still unable to cope with the thought of Edward leaving her. Her heart drunk as she watched Edward shake his head in disagreement. She had already suspected this answer and yet she couldn't stop the way her heart ached.
"No. I don't want to risk putting you in any more danger physically or emotionally. And we're set on moving, this afternoon actually. We are going to move for away from here. Somewhere that isn't sunny... Maybe somewhere in London."
Bella felt her lips quirk into a smile despite the seriousness of the situation. Edward gave her a small smile of his own and squeezed her shaking hands on reassurance."I guess this is a goodbye... Arizona."
And just like that Bella crumpled to the ground in tears as Edward climbed out of her window slowly, all the while staring at the sobbing figure of his ex.
