Survivors (a set it off fanfic)

One

ALEXS POV

It's been days since we last stopped for more than a few hours. we've been running and running and running and I can tell that neither of us has enough food. we may need to stop to raid a store in the next town. hopefully we'll even find somewhere safe to stay for a few days to recharge. I was brought out of my little journal entry when I heard rylee shout my name. I groaned, when is she gonna learn we can't be loud or we'll attract walkers?
"What rylee? and for gods sake be quiet!" I whisper shouted to her from atop my tree branch I ha been sitting in. "I see people! they look harmless! can we go talk to them?" I sighed. she sounded so hopeful and maybe they were harmless but we can't be to sure. "let me see them rye, where are they?" i shuffled over to the branch she was on, being careful to keep most of my weight off of it so I didn't snap it. rylee pointed over to a cluster of roof tops in the distance. I squinted, I could barley make out a trail of smoke coming up from what might have been a campfire, or they could be burning bodies. I looked at rylee, her brown hair was hanging in her face and I couldn't help but chuckle softly at it. "rye your hairs in your face. how can you tell their harmless?" she tucked her hair behind her ear and pointed to the smoke again "if they were dangerous they would be smarter than that" she whispered. I'll admit she had a good point but it could still be a trap. I sighed, "rylee we have to be careful you never know it could be a trap" she frowned, her eyebrows drawing closer together. I could practically see the gears turning in her head. her eyes lit up,"we still need to make a run into town! maybe they have extra food or a place to stay?" I hummed to show I had heard her. she had a point, we did need food and we seriously needed to get out of these trees. "alright but be careful yeah?" she smiled wide, causing her dimples to show. i grinned back at her and we climbed out of the tree. we trekked towards the small town, on guard for any lone walkers. rylee stuck her hand I front of my chest and pulled me behind her. "what wa-" she cut me off by shushing me. It was then I heard the moaning coming from a walker about 10 feet from us. rylee loaded her bow that she always kept on her back and fired, hitting the thing straight through the eye. she grinned and pulled the arrow out of its eye with a sickening squish. I shuttered, that noise always made me want to throw up. I'll admit rylee acts childish sometimes, ok a lot of times, but she's really smart and strong in situations like this. she's older than me by about a year and she never lets me forget it. We walked through the woods and kept an eye out for any other lone walkers. we made it to the town without any other run ins. I could clearly see the fire now, it was coming from behind a Harley Davidson's shop. I grabbed the back of rylee's backpack, stopping her from running straight into the store. "be quiet and let me go first ok?" I whispered to her. she nodded and I crept out of the woods and checked the streets for walkers. this area seemed to be relatively clear of the beasts so I darted across the street. I pressed my back to the side of the shop and tried to calm my breathing while I waited for rylee to come after me. when she reached me i mouthed 'wait here' before creeping towards the back, where the fire was coming from. when the fire came in sight I stopped, no one was here. I let out a sigh of relief, we wouldn't need to risk meeting the other group that had been here. I turned, about to walk towards rylee when I felt something cold press against the back of my head. "Make any sudden movements and your dead." a strong voice told me, it had a sort of childish like tone, like rylee's. I gulped. I prayed to every god I could think of that rylee would stay hidden. Unfortunately rylee had other plans and I could see her head starting to peak out from behind the wall. "Cody over there, there's another one." a voice with a strange accent said. so the man with the gun to my heads name was cody. Cody grunted and told him to heap her. "rylee you idiot" I mumbled under my breath. "what was that girl?" Cody snarled. " I said, rylee you idiot," I told him, my voice crackling slightly due to lack of water and the fact that I rarely speak above a whisper. while I had been talking to Cody a man with blond hair had grabbed rylee. when rylee saw who was holding me her eyes widened. "holy shit.. I know who you are!"
