Liam’s POV
I knelt beside the small body, tiny in the balloon of the jacket. Her jeans were ripped away and her leg was bleeding freely. I frowned with concern and slowly went to her head. Her helmet obscuring her face, that faces that she always kept hidden. I placed my hand behind her head as I prized the helmet off carefully, her head flopped out and I gasped in surprise! I didn’t know who she was; I had never seen her before in my life. But she was special, I knew that. I gathered her up in my arms, she was like a rag doll, and her shallow breathing barely reassured me that she was safe. Pulling her to my chest I jogged to my car trying to move her as little as possible. I reach my car in a couple of seconds and placed her in the passenger seat gently. I need to get her to my parents now. I shut her door, ran back the bike and pushed it to the hedge, I would come back later.
The lane was too narrow for me to turn around in so I reversed my way back down at a dangerous speed but all that mattered was the girl. Glancing nervously at her I pulled into our drive I jumped out and started yelling for my parents. My father came sprinting out in a panic.
‘What? What? What’s wrong, Liam? What’s happened?’ He was stricken, looking at me, scrutinizing me, searching for wounds.
‘No, I’m fine, but she isn’t. The girl.’ I say hurriedly.
‘The girl?’ he answered and I lead him to the car door. When he sees his whole demeanor changes. He’s now a doctor. He reaches in and pulls her out gently. Indicating for me to follow he walks steadily towards the door.
‘Get your mother’ He orders. I nod silently and go and find her.
She is in the kitchen. She knows by my face that there is something wrong. Then she sees her blood on my clothes and starts.
‘Not me’ I reassure her. She follows me towards the back room. When we reach there my father has already laid her out on the bed and cut away a part of the material on her jeans. As we walk in and my mothers face instantly changes like my fathers had. He glances at my and bids me to leave. I do. I had never seen them operate or ever behave in that way – my parents past was a complete mystery to me.
I make my way to my room and throw myself down on my bed, exhausted. My fingers go to my neck and the thick veins that had been there since the… Suddenly it hit me. Who that girl was. It was the girl that was with us at lunch today, the one that had screamed. I had never noticed her before, but somehow I knew that she had been there all along. It was the girl I had seen running relentlessly on the treadmill. I had thought she had been stung. But, but when it had happened to me I had been knocked unconscious by the pain, I was incapable of anything for weeks. The poison had pushed out the sting after a couple of days; I saw no sting on her face. Merely a purple spot, like mine. But it had not become healed for three months. I was bewildered, I was scared. Who was this girl where had she come from? Perhaps she had the answer? Maybe she knew what was happening.
I traced my fingers along the veins again, following the dark shaped until they came to the tough knot that was shaped in a small tattoo that resembled a dragon below my collar bone. It had become habit for me to do so, now that every trace of pain had gone. It calmed me to feel them. My head began to hurt and I went to my bathroom to take some aspirin. I caught sight of my face in the mirror. I looked awful, blood was smeared on my face but something caught my eye, something that made me tremble. The dark veins that had appeared after the sting had began to spread further up my neck. I could visibly see them crawling from the tight knot, moving, like snakes. I pulled my tee shirt over my head. The veins creeping across my chest, black and still spreading. I push at the streams, trying to stop them. Suddenly a wave of pain made my body spasm and I fell to the floor hitting my head on the sink.
