The First Phone Call

I was reading in bed by lamplight when my phone rang. I looked over at my bedside table, but the number wasn't one that I recognized.

'What kind of telemarketer calls this late into the evening?' I thought, scowling at the device.

I turned my gaze back to my book as the call went to voicemail.

It rang again but I persevered. My novel was in the middle of it's climax and I didn't want to let some random number distract me from what was really important.

The ringing stopped again, but when my phone went off for the third time, I was ready to give this telemarketer a piece of my mind.

"Hello?" I answered, clearly annoyed.

"Uh,  hi, is the Y/N?" A man was on the other side of the call, his voice a little nasally, and sheepish.

Who's voice was this? It sounded familiar.

"Who's asking?" I asked, my defenses up.

"Denki Kaminari," he replied.

My blood ran cold, it felt as if time had stopped. I hadn't talked to him in years, not since graduation, but I have seen him on TV every now and again. He had to be dependable and active in society if he wanted to keep his spot as the number five hero.

"Kaminari...kun...?" I said, the bark out of my voice. My hand reached for my bedside table, without looking, I pressed a finger on my bookmark and slid it off and into my book.

He laughed on the other side of the phone, that hadn't changed at all. It was just as playful now as it was back then.

"So it is you?" He asked.

"How did you get my number?" I replied.

I've been out of the hero field for about a year and a half now. I had held the number 9 spot for two years before hiding away in Western Japan. I was running a partnered hero agency with a close friend named Momo, who I met when I worked for my first agency after graduation. Her quirk is telepathy, but using it gives her migraines depending on what she's using it on and for how long, so she handles all of the expenses while the hired heroes and I handle the villains. I plan to go back once I'm ready.

"Your partner gave it to me once I told her who I was, and how I know you," Kaminari answered, "it's been a while hasn't it?" He laughed again.

"Yeah, it has," I replied as I slipped out of bed, the tatami flooring crunching beneath my feet.

"What's this about anyway?" I asked as I stepped out onto the wooden floorboards in the hallway. I paced back and forth, the only light coming from my bedroom.

"How long has it been since we graduated? Five years?" Kaminari sounded as if he were thinking out loud.

"Anyway, I was thinking that it might be fun if I could get our old class together to see how everyone's doing," he finished.

"Oh yeah?" I drawled, "that sounds like fun," it came out flat but the seed he just planted in my mind had sprouted immediately. I was already thinking about how this could possibly turn out if anyone was up for it.

"Yeah," his response was short but strong enough to regain my attention,

"I was thinking that if I started reaching out to people now, we would have enough time to arrange a meetup in Tokyo next month. I was thinking a week before the holidays."

"How many people have you gotten a hold of?" I asked interested.

"Just you so far..." he trailed off, he sounded a little embarrassed.

'Well maybe if you didn't call so late..." I thought.

"What do you think?" Kaminari asked me, he sure sounded hopeful.

"Listen..." I started, slowing to a halt. I leaned on the wall, looking down my hallway, past the kitchen, at the front entryway, before I made my proposal,

"I'm living in a beautiful two story country house in the west, where the rice fields grow. How would feel about meeting up here? I could order dinner and it'll be cozier than some restaurant in the hustle and bustle of Tokyo."

Kaminari's silence felt like it lasted forever, but he finally spoke,

"Ah man, Y/N, I knew you were the right person to call first!" Kaminari sounded absolutely ecstatic, "you really mean that?"

"Yeah," I said, a smile creeping onto my lips, "it'd be fun to see all you guys again."

"That's awesome!" Kaminari exclaimed, "I'll try to get in touch with everyone in the next few days, I'll call you next week, okay?"

"Alright," I smiled.

We said our goodbye's and hung up. How did I expect myself to read now? There was too much to think about.

I walked back into my bedroom, slid open the closet and pulled out the first sweater I saw. After slipping it on, I made my way to the front entryway. I needed some fresh air after that phone call. I grabbed my winter jacket from the closet beside my front door, put that on as well, slipped on a pair of shoes and stepped out into the cold November night.

"Christmas with Class 1A, huh?" I said to myself, big clouds of hot breath escaping my lips.

I looked up at the night sky.

Clouds lit by moonlight crawled lazily along the navy backdrop.

"Not many stars out tonight," I stated to myself, and there weren't, but I blamed the clouds for hiding them.

Lowering my head, I fixed my gaze to the end of the walkway.

I inhaled thinking of nothing but the way the cold air felt in my lungs. In an instant, my mind was clear, but just breathing alone wasn't going to keep my mind settled for long.

I stepped out from underneath the roof and started my late night stroll with nothing but the riverbed in mind.
