You're standing among your bloody and battered schoolmates at the demolished entrance to Hogwarts. The air reeks of death and cinders from the many small fires that were ignited by misfired spells. It appears all hope is lost. The chosen one is gone. You watched so many of your friends perish on this day that you can't even bring yourself to fear the end. Huddling amidst the rubble of your former home, you realize that after everything that has happened; you welcome death.

"Draco."

New life springs into your body as your head swings in the voice's direction. It was Lucius. You follow his line of sight until your bloodshot eyes rest on a familiar figure standing on your side of the courtyard. The man's once perfectly combed platinum hair is a wild mess, his signature black suit a burnt mess of tattered fabric.

He's hesitating.

"Draco. Come here."

Lucius hisses for the second time, gesturing for his son to join him with the other death eaters. Draco is trembling, silver eyes darting from side to side, almost seeming to hope for someone, anyone, to ask him to stay. No one moves. All they can see is a coward. A bully. A monster. Maybe they were right.

But as you gaze upon the broken mess of a man before you, all you can see is the lonely boy you met seven years ago. The boy who sent you chocolates in first year because he saw you eating them on the train. The boy who stole kisses in any shadowed hide-away he could find, and you remember the feeling of his ankle wrapped around yours under the table at the Three Broomsticks. You see enchanted paper birds made ‌of love notes flying your way in class. You remember the way he smelled when he held you close to his chest, like green apples and smoke.

Just as you see him reluctantly step forward, you call his name.
