So when this all started, I was 22. I had actually managed to make a few friends in college, and we were renting an apartment together. Three dudes with one bathroom. Fun. One of them, Michael, was majoring in business and spent all of his free time playing video games. The other one, Carson, was an art major. He didn't spend a lot of time at the apartment, but he was always there at dinner time and made some of the best meals. Honestly, that's really the only time I spent with Carson. Michael, however. I spent a lot of time with Michael. Michael was a pretty quiet guy, so we never really talked much, but we enjoyed each other's company. Sometimes, I'd sit and read on the couch while he played video games in the living room. Other times, we'd play video games together, which is when we talked the most. I know that sounds pretty sad—to only have two friends and barely speak to either of them, but we all like each other pretty well, so it worked.
Now that introductions are out of the way, let's begin the story. One Friday in the middle of the spring semester, I came home to an empty apartment which meant that Michael was still on campus. I headed to my room, threw my backpack down, and flopped onto my bed with a groan. In the last two days, I had had four tests, caught a cold, wrote two papers, and finished a project. God, I hate midterms. Not bothering to crawl under the covers, I let myself fall asleep instead of worrying about any other homework since nothing was due that night. Naps weren't something I did very often, so I wasn't surprised when Michael woke me two hours later up with concern.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
I huffed and mumbled, "Fine, just tired."
"Okay, well Carson is almost finished with dinner if you want some," he said skeptically. He left my room and headed, I assume, to the kitchen. Normally, I would head there too, but I really couldn't find the energy to get up from my nap. Instead, I just went back to sleep. If only I had known that I wasn't just sick and tired. I mean, what the hell else was I supposed to think?
