(TW: mentions of blood. read at your own risk. I know, it's only the first chapter sorry heh)
I sat in class, listening to my teacher drone on about quadratic equations, which I had no intention to learn, but I had to. I stared out the window, watching the rain drops silently slide down the glass. I looked at the sky which looked like someone had draped a thick, grey cloak over it.
Soon, Mrs. Ramsey started talking about a class trip to Oregon to study life in some of the forests. I immediately perked up at that. A class trip? Since when did the principal allow students to travel out of the state? I brushed the suspicious feeling off as excitement coursed through my veins.
After class, Wendy, Peter and I gathered outside the school. "Since when does Principal Jones let us go out of the state for school?" Wendy questioned, repeating my thoughts from earlier. Peter nodded, eyebrow raised in confusion. I was about to answer but just then my phone started ringing. I fumbled to get it out of my bag and read the caller ID. Unknown Number. Whoever was calling me would not give up so I cautiously pressed the answer button.
"Beware of Typhon. Beware of Typhon." a robotic voice repeated on the other end of the phone. Wait, isn't Typhon the monster that ravaged Mount Olympus in Greek Mythology? I thought, beginning to feel scared. I asked the voice their identity but I was only answered with the same phrase. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up, and I knew someone was watching us from behind. Wendy clung to Peter's arm, so I assumed her intuition was on the same page as mine.
"Come on, guys, let's go, I have a strange feeling, like someone's watching us."
"I agree." said Peter, tensing up and blushing at the same time from Wendy's grip. We began to walk, but it felt like whoever was watching us was following. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a man in a black coat dive into an alley, head turned to face me. I was sure I heard him whisper something about the same Typhon guy. "Guys, run!" I whispered. As our feet repeatedly hit the concrete sidewalk, I heard a high pitched scream followed by three gunshots. The silence after was deafening.-
Dirty water on the sidewalk splashed up onto my pants as my friends and I bolted down the pavement to my house. Peter and Wendy jumped through the doorway and I followed, locking and bolting the big oak door behind me. My parents were on a business trip and would not come back until May the tenth, a month away from then, so I was alone in the house after school- most of the time, except for when my neighbor, an eccentric old lady, came to check on me, and when my sister who now attended college came on the weekend. However, I had a feeling that I definitely did not want to be alone for the next month.
"Peter, Wendy, do you mind staying over tonight? I... I have a feeling something might happen to me if I'm alone." I asked, my voice shaking slightly. They both agreed and called their parents, asking permission to stay the night. Once they got permission, Wendy, Peter and I walked up the concrete stairs to my bedroom.
Strangely, my nose picked up the scent of dried blood. My eyes grew as wide as saucers as I saw that a picture of me on my side table had been thrown to the ground, making the glass shatter. There was a note next to the shattered picture that said in messy, blood red letters:
"This will be you next time. Your blood will become my ink.~ Typhon."
I dropped my school bag in shock. He knows where I live. HE KNOWS WHERE I LIVE! I thought, panicking. Wendy came by my side, patting me on the back. "It's okay, Sadie, we're going on the trip to Oregon tomorrow, so there's no way he can do anything to you. Well... never mind, I don't want to scare you." she said. I knew exactly what she was going to say; that Mr. Nobody might be a stalker. I shuddered at the thought of it.
To lighten the mood, Peter suggested that we play Truth or Dare. I mentally rolled my eyes as Peter was always up for a game of Truth or Dare. "Okay, I'll start. Peter... Truth or Dare?" I asked.
"Dare... duh!" He said confidently.
" I dare you to hold Wendy's hand for the entire night, including when you're sleeping." I said with a mischievous smirk on my face. They both turned tomato red and entwined their fingers with each other's.
"My turn!" Wendy said, excited for payback. "Truth or Dare?" she said with a mischievous smile.
"Umm.. truth." I answered. After a few rounds, we decided to go to sleep. I could not sleep. I kept tossing and turning, thinking about "Typhon". I decided to get off my bed and when I looked on the ground, I saw Wendy snuggling into Peter's chest, still holding his hand. I smirked, reached for my phone and took a few quick photos to show them in the morning. After putting my phone down, I turned my head to the window and spotted someone in a black cloak run across the street from my front yard and melt into the shadows on the other side of the street where the lights didn't shine.
-
The morning sunshine shone through the window as I got out of bed in the morning. Peter and Wendy had separated during the night, one of of them in the corner of the room and one near the bathroom door. Jeez! Did those two dance across the room in their sleep? I thought, chuckling. I went downstairs and poured some cereal and milk into a bowl, then sat down at the table to eat. After about five minutes, I heard Peter and Wendy coming down the stairs. Remembering their position last night, I smirked and opened my phone, getting the photos of them sleeping.
"Guys, I've got something to show you!" I said in a teasing tone.
"What?" they both asked groggily. I smirked again and showed them the phone. Wendy's eyes opened wide and she excused herself to use the bathroom, while Peter blushed, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly. Then, I remembered what I had seen the night before.
"Peter, Wendy,... I saw something last night after I took the pictures of you two cuddling. I saw... a man, or woman, in a black cloak running from my front yard over to where the streetlamps don't shine, in the shadows. And I'm pretty sure he or she was watching us through the window" I revealed. Wendy had come back from the bathroom, and her face went from bright red to ghostly pale. She stood, trembling in fear. An eerie silence passed. My words cut the thick silence like a hot knife through butter. "Well, we better start getting packed for the trip." Peter and Wendy agreed and waited me to pack so I could go with them.
After bouncing around to each of our houses to pack, we ran to school and boarded the buses waiting to take our class to the airport. Soon after, the buses pulled up outside the airport. We hauled our bags out of the bus and walked into San Diego International Airport.
Mrs. Ramsey allowed all of us to grab a coffee, drink or snack from Starbucks while we waited for our flight. When security was checking my bag, the monitor beeped. "Miss, it seems like you have a knife in your bag." the security guard said. I was confused, as I hadn't put a knife in my bag. I opened the bag and sure enough, there was a knife- with a note attached to it. It read:I know where you're going, and I will be there. I will find you- and hurt you. ~Typhon
I dropped the knife onto the conveyor belt in shock. He knew where I was going. I crumpled the note and threw it in the bin, making sure to tell my friends when we were on the plane. After I got through security, I hurried along to board the plane.
Later, when everyone was settled down, I told my friends. Wendy went paler than she did earlier and Peter's eyes were as big as saucers. I tried to calm myself down after a while, but the scary note kept sneaking back into my mind. I looked over to my friends and saw that Peter was watching a movie with earbuds in and Wendy had fallen asleep watching the same movie, her head resting in his shoulder. So oblivious. I said in my mind as I watched the two lovebirds. This was the only thing that would keep me from thinking about Typhon. I shook my head and smiled.
A/N: so i merged chapters 1-3, and changed the name of the antagonist. for new readers, if you see "mr. nobody" just ignore it :) i'll be editing the rest of the story soon.
