Vaughn's eyes gaze at the swirling purple vortex as winds gush out of the portal. The wind thrusting his hair. The black plaid shirt pushing at his arms as the force travels through the backside of his sleeves. Surely he was just seeing things.
Patting down on the grass, he tries to find his glasses. Within 5 seconds, he felt a smooth, plastic thing in his sweaty hands. Thank heavens he found them. Now to see if he was seeing things. Lifting the two temples, his eyes stare at the glowing purple vortex that has been bewildering him for 30 seconds. He was wrong. It was a real swirling vortex. He's seen this in his favorite fantasy books, but he does not understand what it's doing here. In his mind, he wonders.
Who summoned it? Why is it here on Earth? What does the vortex want? Will I die if I step in? How was it made? Where will this lead me to if I step in?
The last question fills him with more curiosity. His hand on his chin, he ponders and paces back and forth about what he should do. If he were to step in, the portal might close in on him and he'll be in there forever. No way to return to his friends. No way to return to his home. And no way to return to his foster parents. If he stays in his realm, he'll miss on the opportunity of a lifetime. Who knows when it will come back? This might be his only chance.
Anxiety fills him. Both seem like bad choices, but he has to choose one or the other. Vaughn's eyes shut as his legs move. He grabs his beanie and pulls it to his hairline. One leg, then the other. He finally stands on his two feet. His eyes filled with determination to gaze at the portal again. His hands close into strong gripped fists. He wasn't afraid to enter. Was he? Taking a deep breath, he fills with more confidence.
"I can do this," Vaughn said as he breathes out.
One foot moves. And then the other. One foot. And then the other. Soon, he has successfully entered the purple portal.
