[Angst°]"Uh... hi! I'm, uh, Dr. Spencer Reid, and I can't quite come to the phone right now. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, I'm most likely working a case, because usually I'm not doing anything else, so- Reid... you're rambling. Right, uh, try again later? Sorry, byeee!"
You let out a defeated sigh upon listening to the pre-recorded voicemail Reid made a few years ago. It was in 2004, you guys were working on your first case together, when you had called Reid to tell him about some newly found information on the case. His phone ended up going to voicemail, but there wasn't a pre-recorded message, and you furrowed your eyebrows. You ended up leaving him a voicemail anyway, before ending the call. He called back within a few seconds, apologizing, before explaining that he was in the middle of talking to a possible suspect.
After the case wrapped up, you asked Reid about it, and he admitted that he didn't know how to set one up.
"The Doctor Reid doesn't know to set up a voicemail greeting?" You teased, but also genuinely confused.
Reid chuckled, turning a light shade of red. Why was he embarrassed?
"Ye-yeah, I guess not. I just don't understand this whole technology stuff." He said, quickly swiping his tongue across his bottom lip.
"I can help you if you want." You offered, holding your hand out for his phone.
"Please." He breathed out, taking the device from his pocket, handing it to you.
"Okay, so, you go to your contacts," you said, moving closer to Reid so he could see what you're doing on the screen. You could feel him slightly tense up, but ignored it, focusing on what you were doing on the phone. "Then, you go to voicemail, then go to greeting... custom... then, press record and start talking. Got it?" You asked, looking at him, but he seemed to be zoned out, staring at your face.
You sighed, wondering if he heard anything you said. "Reid! Were you even listening?" You asked, a smile threatening to spread on your lips.
"Huh? Oh! Yeah-yeah, I-I was listening. I just talk into the phone, got it." He nodded his head, before gently grabbing his phone from your hand.
He pressed 'record' before he started to talk into the built in microphone on his phone.
"Uh..." he hesitated, turning to you, not really knowing what to say. You mouthed 'hi', a huge smile now on your face from how nervous Reid was from only making a voicemail greeting. "Hi! I'm, uh, Dr. Spencer Reid, and I can't quite come to the phone right now. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, I'm most likely working a case, because usually I'm not doing anything else, so-" he started to ramble, as cute as it was, you had to interrupt him so the voicemail could be kept short. "Reid... you're rambling." You said a laugh slipping past your lips. Reid let out a nervous chuckle, once again licking his lips, "Right, uh, try again later? Sorry, byeee!" Reid finished, before pressing the stop button.
"Awesome! Now, people won't think you're boring." You joked, patting Reid on the back.
"'Boring'?" Reid laughed. "Ouch." He touched the side of his chest where his heart is, feigning hurt.
"Yup, now, let's get out of here. I'm tired." You yawned. Reid nodded his head, agreeing, before getting out of his chair and stretching.
The two of you walked out of the bullpen, after grabbing your things, and went to you're separate homes.
Now, it was 8 years later, and that same voicemail that once made you smile so hard that your cheeks hurt, caused your heart to feel like it was getting ripped out of it's chest. Reid's pre-recorded message was right, as mean as that sounds, unless he was on a case, he usually answered his phone right away, and if not the first time, definitely anytime after that.
