Past: he ate the Ghost-Ghost Fruit when he was 6 years old, and he was so scared of what his parents would think of him now, so he decided to run away from home and since that day he became a pirate. He met Luffy (on the island where he started to live with Curly Dadan)(after Ace left to become a pirate) when they were still younger and he decided to stay with him there.
