*Rosewood Elementary. Miss Rose's second-grade class*
It's that time of year.
That time where the halls and classrooms at school are decorated in pinks and reds with hearts and cards, and kids asking each other out, and giving others Conversation Hearts candies.
The second-, third-, and fourth-grade classrooms that hold the kids are no different. Their classrooms are all decorated the same. Hearts in pinks and reds, streamers, and signs on the doors.
Today is the Annual Rosewood Elementary Valentine's Party.
Each class gets two hours before lunch and one hour after lunch for their party. They play, talk, hand out their Valentine cards, and eat cookies and cupcakes.
After the kids hand out their cards, they get in line with their plates for cookies, cupcakes, and fruit punch.
Hanna comes over to Emily. She's given Aria, who is in her class this year, a Valentine's Day card but did not give one to Emily.
This is because she spent 2 hours the night before cutting, pasting, drawing, and writing a heart-shaped Valentine's Day card.
She shyly hands it to Emily, worried that the older girl will think it is silly. After all, girls are not supposed to give other girls a special Valentine's card, only to boys or from boys.
"Emmy, I-I made this for you," Hanna tells her quietly. "I made it in your favorite color, blue. See? There is you and me." She points out a picture. Emily opens the heart and inside is a little poem.
Roses are red, vilits are blue. You are my frind, I hope you have a Happy Valentine's Day to.
Emily reads the poem and grins at Hanna. The poem rhymes even if not exactly.
There are a couple of words misspelled, but Emily does not care about that. Her friend made her a hand-made card and that makes her very happy.
"This is very nice, Hannie," She says. "My Valentine's Day is good but only 'cause you said for me to have one."
This makes Hanna feel very happy. She was so nervous about making it last night. She hadn't asked her mom how to spell the words because she was afraid Ashley would ask what she was doing.
And she was afraid if she said what, that Ashley would tell her not to do it because girls are not supposed to make a special Valentine's for another girl.
After putting the card carefully in her Home folder, Emily goes with Hanna to the snack table and they share a plate of heart-shaped pink cookies.
Emily giggles as Hanna eats a cupcake and gets icing on her nose and Hanna lets her taste the fruit punch since Emily has never has their particular flavor before.
