Chapter Two:
Throughout the whole day, I could feel unwanted shivers slither up my spine. I couldn’t get rid of the feeling that someone was watching me.
After seeing the stranger mysteriously disappear, I had dismissed him as a hallucination that my poor, tired brain had conjured up. However, at the ice cream parlor, I saw the stranger again, only this time, he was wearing shades. I didn’t know how I knew it was him; his clothes wear common enough that anyone could be wearing them, and when I looked away for a split second, he was gone. It couldn’t be a coincidence. The whole day, I would see people in inconspicuous clothing as well as the stranger follow me around, but they would always disappear so quickly.
When Clarity and I arrived at our apartment, I was jittery and nervous, and Clarity finally noticed.
“What’s wrong?” Clarity asked, dumping her bags in the middle of the living room and plopping down on the couch. “You look pale.”
“N-Nothing’s wrong.” I gasped out. “It’s the sugar rush.”
“Aria, you only had two bites of your ice cream before you threw it away.” Clarity scolded. “I know that you’re lying, and that was a huge waste of ice cream”
“Claire I—”
“Aria,” Clarity interrupted, “we’ve been friends for how long? Forever. You can trust me.”
I gulped, anxious for unknown reasons. “I feel like I’m being watched.”
“By who?”
“I-I don’t know exactly, just that today, I saw people following me around but when I gave them a second glance, they all disappear.” I sighed, plopping down on the couch next to her.
“Oh, sweetie,” Clarity cooed. “Are you sure you’re not just tired?”
“I thought so too, but…” I sighed again. “I don’t even know anymore.”
Clarity frowned, reaching over to feel my forehead. “Do you have classes tomorrow?”
I shook my head.
“Great! I don’t either. So what we’re going to do is have a girls night. You are going to relax and calm your mind. Tomorrow, if you still feel like someone is watching you, we’re heading straight to the police.” Clarity said in complete seriousness.
“Have I ever told you I love you, Clary-poo? This is why you’re my best friend,” I smiled.
That night, Clarity and I watched Netflix for hours on end. Clarity ate a whole tub of ice cream by herself and managed to empty out our snack cabinet. How that girl stays so skinny, I’ll never know. In the end, I could only force myself to nibble on some popcorn. Normally, I would be stuffing my face with food, but couldn’t bring myself to eat. I could tell that Clarity was worried, but she didn’t say anything and for that, I was grateful.
After our Netflix session, Clarity forced me to go to bed at ten. She ordered me to have a good night’s sleep because she “hated my crankiness in the morning” but I could tell that she was just looking out for me. I couldn’t complain with the opportunity to sleep more. In fact, I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.
That night something woke me into a sleepy haze. The one where you are slightly aware of your surroundings, but you can’t move at all. I felt a presence of someone in my room. I couldn’t move as I felt warmth from a body next to my bed. Trapped in between sleep and consciousness, I felt a caress against my cheek and soft breaths against my hair. It was oddly soothing. Letting out a soft sigh, my brain started to shut down again, my body relaxing as sleep came to claim me once more. A soft voice hummed a gentle lullaby as tender hands stroked my cheek, moving strands of hair back behind my ear.
My lips tugged into a gentle smile and I felt safe and calm. Soft lips brushed my forehead, my eyelids, my cheeks, my nose, and finally my mouth before gliding to my ear.
“Sweet dreams. Goodnight, Arianna my angel.”
The warmth left and I heard the soft sound of a window being closed before I was pulled back into sleep.
