The beginning of the rumours is of course the base and its securities. Why does it need so much security and classification?, what is there for the government to keep that much tight security?, Im sure questions like these are popping in your mind, but we don't have much information on what is inside the base and why is it so classified. But we have information on when was the base was created and for what purpose. So let's begin.
The creation of Area 51 is directly linked to the creation of Lock-head U-2 reconnaissance aircraft. After the 2nd World War, USSR lowered the Iron curtain around the borders(around themselves) and the rest of the Eastern side, creating an almost intelligence block on the rest of the world on the USSR. When the USSR aided the North Korean invasion on South Korea in 1950, it became increasingly clear that the Kremlin would not stop and aggressively expand its influence. The US wanted to spy on the USSR with military aircrafts(40,000 m) but were extremely worried that the planes will get seen and get shot down. So in 1954 President Eisenhower authorised the plan to develop a high altitude aircraft and the project's name was "the Aquatone", the development of a top secret high altitude aircraft which can spy from far greater altitude and can not be seen in that era. He wanted a top secret facility which isn't accessible by normal citizens and spies.
This base fit all those points perfectly, which is located in the Nevada desert near Groom Lake which is a salt flat. No one knows why the name of the base is Area 51, but a theory claims that the name came from its proximity to the Nevada nuclear test sites. The nuclear test site was divided into numerous number-designated areas by the AEC(Atomic Energy Commission), this location was already familiar territory to the military as it served as a World War 2 aerial shooting range. In 1955 there were sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects(UFO's) reported near Area 51. That is because the Military have begun their testing of the U-2 aircraft.
The U-2 can fly higher than 60,000 feet, which is way higher than that era's normal planes which fly at 10,000 to 20,000 feet. While the military aircrafts fly as much as around 40,000 feet at that time, this is why when the pilot of a military aircraft spotted a tiny speck which was the U-2 high above the aircraft, he had no idea what it was(since only high commanders knew about the U-2). They would usually let the air traffic control know there was someone or something high above them. This has led to the increase in UFO sightings in that area, while the air force officials knew that these sightings were the U-2 tests, but they couldn't expose the plan to the public so they tried to tell them that the sightings were actually "Natural Phenomenon" and "High-altitude Weather Research". The testing of the U-2 aircraft was completed in the late 1950's, but Area 51 continued to be the testing ground of many military aircrafts. The government only recently(2013) exposed the existence of Area 51 and the U-2 aircraft by the release of declassified CIA reports.
The audience after reading this, "The author is stupid, the book says UNSOLVED mysteries but this one has been solved, why did he keep this in his book?". I assure you that not all people agree to this, they still think that the government is lying. This is totally on you if you wish to believe this or not.
