seiki y/n

"is... is this science lab c?" a blonde head popped out from behind the lab's main door.

everyone's heads turned to the doorway, akaashi, y/n and daisuke included. it was still tense after akaashi and daisuke's testosterone show, and y/n was grateful their attention was redirected elsewhere.

"oh, you're the new student!" harada turned away from the whiteboard, smiling. "yes, this is lab c. come in, grayson-san."

"i'd be more comfortable if you addressed me as heather-san." heather, smiling, entered the lab.

her smile is so bright. y/n eyed the things heather bundled to her chest — the pastel-coloured folders, the pencil cases and her laptop. she's neat, unlike me, who casually carries books and notebooks around without a folder. my pencil case doesn't even exist. actually, i don't bring my stationeries to school anymore. y/n wrinkled her nose before looking away.

harada nodded, scanning the classroom. her eyes landed on y/n's table. y/n winced, predicting their teacher's decision. "in that case, heather-san, you can go sit next to seiki-san. the rest of you, log in your laptops and get on teams. i attached instructions there for our lesson today."

i can't work with this group.

the trio on y/n's table watched heather as she made her way to them. heather was still smiling, even more so when she saw akaashi on their table.

"hello," she chirped, taking a seat beside y/n.

the three said their unenthusiastic hello's, heather then striking up a conversation with the boys. y/n shifted her chair and pretended she was only moving her chair forward, but instead was moving it to the right as well — away from heather. the other girl didn't seem to notice.

"so." heather turned to y/n and stuck out a hand. "i haven't met you before. i'm heather grayson, a girl from america."

y/n tried to replicate the genuine smile on heather's face. or was it even genuine?

who even says "a girl from america"? that's just so—

smile.

y/n shook heather's waiting hand. don't be so judgemental, you idiot.

"i'm seiki y/n. y/n's my first name but you can refer to me as seiki-san," she said lightly. "could i call you gray-chan, if you don't mind?"

heather frowned.

eh? did my introduction tick her off?

"'-chan'?" heather tilted her head in confusion.

oh.

"it's another suffix to put after someone's name who's either younger than you, or is someone you're familiar with," akaashi pitched in.

heather glanced at the black-haired boy, flipping her own hair behind her shoulder.

"thanks, akaashi-kun." heather beamed.

'kun'? y/n looked up from her laptop screen at akaashi. he didn't rebuke the title, casually getting on with reading the attachment on teams. but heather's only been here for a day — i didn't think they were that close.

"hmm.. seiki-chan, if i may," heather began, y/n frowning, "akaashi-kun's mentioned you before. are you friends?"

oh?

what did he tell you, heather? y/n wondered. did he tell heather how y/n wasn't good enough for him?

"all positive things, i hope?" she joked, although her face lacked humour.

"akaashi-san said they're dating." daisuke didn't bother looking away from his laptop screen.

"dating?"

"actually—"

"yes," akaashi interrupted y/n. "we are."

y/n shut her mouth and looked away. no we're not.

"i thought... ah, never mind," heather muttered and started typing away at her keyboard.

no one was talking yet again. the silence suffocated y/n. there was too much tension, too many words unspoken. her mind was brimming with questions — questions about everyone on her table.

does daisuke like me?

what did akaashi tell heather?

and what the hell is akaashi talking about, telling daisuke we're dating when we're clearly not?

so she stood up and made her way to the teacher, deciding that she should do something about the table group before anything else happens. there was already an issue between the boys, and heather... i don't want to work with her.

if they can't work together properly with me there, then i'll just move to another group.

"harada sensei." y/n flashed her teacher a charismatic grin. "may i please move table groups?"

the teacher looked up from her own laptop, tilting her head in confusion. "is there something wrong with your group?"

"um..."

how should i say this...?

"i don't think we'd work together very well, so i'm a little concerned about how things will turn out," y/n explained.

it was true in some ways.

"hm... but akaashi-san and suzumeda-san are high achievers. isn't every student's dream to be grouped up with the smart kids?"

"but miss—"

"you know what, i think you and akaashi-san would have good chemistry working together." harada winked. "i'm pairing the both of you up for the assessment."

...

y/n faked a smile. "okay."

fuck.
