"Ari!" I heard my name being called as covered my eyes to the light in my bedroom that was just switched on.

I curled into the fetal position under my covers and groaned. I was very hungover and not in the mood to chat with my roommate, sister, and best friend. It was a Saturday, so it was more than likely that she wanted to play a video game, go shopping, or do anything that she believed would get me out of my depressed state.

"Ari," She said in a tone that was both agitated and sympathetic at the same time, "Why would you even drink?"

"I was depressed," I replied, "And it tasted good."

"You know that stuff is dangerous."

Jazmina was always very straight edge when it came to drinking or any recreational drug use. She absolutely hated it. She wasn't straight edge when it came it certain things though. She wouldn't hesitate to yell and cuss you out if you pissed her off. Take it too far and she might bitch slap you. Don't get me wrong, she was very nice... If she liked you.

"I know that," I said, "But I can't say that I really care. Anyway, why did you interrupt my sleep?"

"It's two in the afternoon," She said, "You need to get up and do something. You won't feel better if you don't."

"Jaz... I appreciate your concern, but I can't for a lot of reasons. For one, I'm short on cash. Ever since Anvilwield caught..."

"Don't finish that sentence!" Jaz exclaimed, "You need to forget about your job at that facility. I know you saw some shit, but you need to block it out. Every time you think about it you have a panic attack."

It was too late. The memories of the shit that I saw at the facility began to flood in. You see, I am a doctor with many degrees and qualifications. I was focused on three fields of study while working at this particular "hospital." Anvilwield Psychiatric Hospital was a very unique mental hospital. Most people lock clinically insane people up and drug them for the rest of their lives, but the founders at Anvilwield had a different thought. What if those "crazy" people could see things we couldn't? What if those people had access to other dimensions, realms, or anything else of the sort? Maybe they weren't altogether there, but they were altogether somewhere else. Of course, the facility saw normal patients as well.

My PhD in Psychology and Eschatology proved to be perfect for the job. I was hired very quickly to conduct interviews with the patients who believed they saw visions of the end times and the afterlife. I thoroughly enjoyed the job. Listening to these people proved to be most intriguing.

Sometimes, we would get patients that fell into a different category of "crazy." Serial killers were often sent to Anvilwield. The worst of the worst. I had to work with those occasionally too. Once a whole group of colorful killers was brought in at once. They all looked unique. One was a man with long dark hair, bleached skin and a smile carved into his face. There was a guy who looked like Link from Legend of Zelda, a woman with a clock for an eye, and a little girl in a pink dress. I don't know why, but I was very kind to them. I listened to all of their stories and felt sympathy for all of them. They all had very unique problems and stories. I often found myself smuggling them extra snacks and such. I didn't see them too often though because my job was to deal with the patients who thought they had access to other realms. Eventually, the group escaped the facility. It was like they somehow just teleported out without a trace. It caused problems, but I wasn't involved in any of them. I was just a doctor in another wing.

Life was good. I was doing what I loved and getting paid very well. I had a roommate not because I needed one, but because I lived in a huge house and wanted to share it with my best friend. Jaz made decent money as well. She was a bodyguard. She was very strong, skilled in multiple martial arts, and essentially John Wick with a gun. Jaz was a badass. Between all of her fighting skills and my skills in Jiu-jitsu and throwing knives, we felt very safe in our home.
