Hello, dear reader! Thank you for taking the time to click on this story. This book is available on amazon under If You Dare by Meg Murray if you're interested in checking it out, but for the time being I'll be posting all my writing on this site for free. Enjoy!

There are moments in a man's life that define who he becomes. Once, there lived a sad, lonely man in the city of New York who earned his living performing on the streets dressed from head-to-toe in metallic silver. Every day to and from work, he rested his forehead against the car's window and allowed his mind to drift. The moment that forever altered his life began like any ordinary day...

Dominic stared out of the subway window at the passing lights as the car rollicked through New York City's underground tunnels. A strip of silver greasepaint, the remnants of his earlier performance, smeared along his jawline. The subway came to a shuddering halt as it approached the next stop. He watched with disinterest as his fellow man shuffled onto the platform, vacating seats for those ready to board.

In the midst of the flurry, you stepped on board. Dominic's stomach fluttered at the sight of you. Your heels clacked on the floor as you found a seat adjacent to his, your black pencil skirt hugging every curve as you sat down. He glanced down at his moth-eaten cardigan and wrinkled dress shirt. Unlike him, you looked professional and affluent. He pressed his thighs together as you crossed one smooth leg over the other, the hem of your skirt riding up to expose the creamy flesh of your thighs. He watched furtively as you withdrew a paperback book from the depths of your purse and peeled it open. Catching a glimpse of the front cover, the title echoed in his mind a hundred times over until he was able to jot it down in his diary.

He had never seen you during his evening commute before. He couldn't tear his eyes away from you. Every nerve-ending in his body prickled with awareness at your nearness, though you seemed oblivious to his quiet torment. His stop came all too soon, but his heart leapt with excitement and anticipation when you also rose from your seat. You exited the car first. He scrambled to match your pace. He hopped onto the platform in time to witness a teenager's shoulder collide with yours in his haste to keep up with his hooligan friends. You purse slipped from your shoulder, the contents spilling across the ground. Dominic quickened his pace, determined to come to your rescue. He was a romantic at heart, after all.

"Shit, shit, shit," you muttered as your hands dodged the feet of passing strangers who couldn't care less about your predicament.

Dominic crouched beside you and gathered your belongings, too shy and nervous to utter a word.

He paused to gaze at you up close, unsure if he would ever have this opportunity again. You paused too, long enough to catch him staring. He averted his gaze, overcome by the cloud of butterflies that released in his stomach at the contact. You bottom lip glistened with saliva as you licked your lips, cautiously tucking a stray tendril of hair behind your ear.

"Thank you for helping," you smiled uncertainly, as though you were quite shy yourself. "It's rare to find good people with generous, selfless hearts in the city these days."

You tentatively gathered your tampons and multiple tubes of black cherry lipstick from his outstretched hands, your skin brushing his for the briefest of moments. He tried to capture and savor the moment, but it was too fleeting. He involuntarily flexed his hand, his fingers burning from the contact. You adjusted the strap of your purse as you slung it over your shoulder and regarded him with a meekness that matched his own. Dominic opened his mouth to speak as you stood, but he found himself at a loss for words in your presence. Within a blink of an eye, you had melded in with the crowd, out of sight.
