I woke up and felt nothing. Ah so this is what death feels like, just a blissful emptiness. No pain, no sounds, just peace. I had wished for death many times throughout the years, but yet it had never come. At least I can finally rest now.
"What are we going to do with her?"
The voice came somewhere above me. Why am I hearing voices? Shit, I guess hell is real. Guess I owe all of those church recruiters an apology for calling them loons.
"We are going to let her rest, Child."
Why would I need to rest if I'm dead? Feeling started to come back and I could feel that I was laying on something soft and warm with something over me. Maybe I'm not dead yet. I tried moving my fingers and toes, but couldn't even get them to twitch, but I could feel the soft surface that they rested on. A blanket maybe?
"But she's connected to Theo, that means trouble will follow her. We can't put our people at risk like that."
Theo? They knew Theo? Oh goddess, would they try using me as bait just like the hunters?
"What we do with her is not your decision to make Noah, now leave us."
"Ah Sebastian, I didn't hear you come in."
"Well that means I'm doing something right," Sebastian chuckled, "how is our patient doing today Doc?"
"Her vitals are remarkable, I don't understand why she hasn't woken up yet. I guess her body just needs time to process the trauma that it went through."
"Did you get anything back from her blood yet? Anything to tell us who or what she might be?"
"I just got her blood work back a few hours ago. There's something not right about it. The levels of the lupine parvovirus are extremely high, to the point of where they should have killed her already. And it's not just that. The levels of the human vampirism virus is just as high. These viruses should be competing against each other, trying to take over, yet they're perfectly coexisting inside of her. I've never seen anything like it before."
Lupine? Vampirism? They can't be serious right? Believing in these myths and stories that get told to scare young children? Shit, they are just as crazy as the hunters. I need to figure a way out of here before they try to sacrifice me on an altar or something.
"Are there any signs of bite marks on her? From either species?"
"No, all of her wounds are human inflicted."
"How can this be possible? I need you to find out everything you can about her. Make sure to destroy all of her blood after you are done researching it. This must stay between us until we know more. I don't want to start a panic among the troops. I am going to do some research in the libraries, see if anything is written about this. Call me the minute she wakes up. We don't know what she's capable of yet or who's side she is on."
"Yes sir."
I could hear his footsteps recede and the door shut behind him. Now I just have to lay still and act like I am still asleep until the good doctor leaves and then I can figure out how I am going to get out of here.
"You can stop pretending now, Dear."
I slowly opened my eyes and was greeted by the blinding lights above me. "Bloody hell," I grumbled while I tried to blink away the spots that danced behind my eyelids every time I shut them. As they slowly started to disappear, I took in my surroundings. The cliche smell of medical grade disinfectants and cleaners assaulted my nose first and if that wasn't enough to give away the fact that they had brought me to some sort of makeshift infirmary, the medical supplies and beeping machines that surrounded me as well as the gurney that I currently laid in cleared up any confusion I had right away. Next I turned to the lady in front of me who I assumed must be the doctor given her white lab coat and earlier conversation with that man. Her round face, plump body, and graying hair that reminded me of the characters who played grandmas in the television shows I used to watch before I was taken. She had kind blue eyes that held an edge to them as if she had seen too much loss in her life. She was currently smiling down at me with a genuine smile that held warmth in it and reached her eyes. It was the kind of smile that made you want to trust her, yet I couldn't bring myself to smile back.
