*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The storm passed by, leaving the ground wet. As the new day began the city began to come alive. People walked out of their homes to begin their jobs as soon as they could.
Azor woke up to the sound of a carriage nearing his boat. He stretched out his arms and then left his cabin to see what was going on. He saw a man standing on the deck looking towards the opposite direction. Azor mumbled to himself and then dragged sword towards the stranger. “Excuse you for entering another one’s ship without asking” he growled and held the sword towards the neck. The stranger turned around. He had black hair, except a few gray stains. He seemed to be a man in his 40’s or so, and had a gentle smile.
“Azor MacLore I presume?” the man asked.
“Who’s asking?” Azor answered, checking the man from top to toe. He was neatly dressed, as an aristocrat.
“Christopher le Mourille. I am but a jeweler who wishes to speak to the captain” the man asked. Azor nodded in response, so that the stranger would know that he was standing in front of the captain. He lowered his sword and put it in the hilt again. “Please allow me to bring you to my home, so that we can speak business” Christopher said and made a slight bow. Azor was resistant. They had gotten a little treasure during their latest raid, not much. But his men would enjoy being well paid for once. He nodded and walked behind Christopher. He wouldn’t bring the treasure yet, as he had been taught by his father.
A carriage was waiting for them on the road and a servant opened the door for them. They both went inside and sat down in front of each other. The carriage started moving and Azor looked out at all the town’s people.
They kept moving until they came to a quite large house. It had two floors, and its top floor was covered in white panels. It had big, square windows around the house and a dark red door on the middle of the wall, on the bottom floor. The bottom floor looked like it was a store, while the top floor was their home. It was quite neat, Azor thought. The carriage stopped and they stepped out and walked towards the house.
“Please, come in” Christopher said and opened the red door. As they got inside Azor saw cases with jewelry in, both for women and for men. He took a look around and let Christopher wait for him to finish. He stopped at a counter, where Christopher was waiting. He showed him into a room behind the counter with a smile and walked in behind Azor.
“Please, have a seat” said Christopher and pointed towards a chair in front of a desk. Apparently this was his office. Azor looked around quickly and then sat down as Christopher sat down behind the desk.
“I wish to speak with you about a certain matter regarding your treasures. Have you found someone who can exchange gems for gold yet?” Christopher said, getting to the point directly. Azor leaned back and crossed his arm, put on his poker face for now. Christopher sighed.
“I am willing to offer you this, for just a small amount of payment. The amount is, of course, discussable” Christopher added. Azor silently sat there. He was interested, that he was. He needed some connections in every city that could give him coins to give to his men. But could he trust Christopher? They had been to this port a few times, this was even his own home-port. He bit the inside of his lip while thinking. He soon decided.
“I thank you for the offer, but I will need to think about it, sir” Azor said slowly as he stood up. Christopher accepted that answer and reached out his hand towards Azor.
“Thank you. You know where to find me when you know” Christopher answered. A door opened behind Christopher. A girl with a tray came in.
“Father? I heard that you had returned. Do you want some…” she said. She looked at Azor who shook Christopher’s hand. A pirate, was her first thought probably, he thought. But she didn’t look scared. She was far too interested in him, in pirates. Azor backed a step from Christopher.
“Excuse me then, sir, miss. We will contact you within a few days, depending on how long my men wish to stay” Azor said and gave them both a theatrical bow before backing out without answers.
He stepped out from the store and let out a deep sigh. He didn’t like these kind of decisions. He would need to gather his crew again, maybe tomorrow then so they could sober up. Or maybe he should just talk to his first-mate? He scratched his head and then started walking down the streets, making his way to the harbor. He passed by a square, filled with people and unconsciously moved his money away, just in time too. A boy had his eyes on him and was moving towards him as soon as Azor had entered the crowd. He stopped and felt something smaller bump into him, so he turned to look at the boy, who looked a little freaked out. Azor just smiled and continued walking, as if nothing had happened.Jacqueline squeaked out of joy towards her father. She jumped up and down, in a very unladylike way. Her father sighed.
“Sweetie, you need to lose this love of pirates” her father said slowly and looked at some papers in front of him.
“But father! It is pirates, they are rare around here! And is he not the son of the famous pirate from this city?” she said overjoyed.
“Jacqueline! It is improper of you!” Christopher said loudly. Jacqueline stopped her movements and lost her smile. She silently begged for forgiveness, but in reality she was not really sorry. She poured his tea and then excused herself, moving herself towards her room. She looked around her before entering her room and locked it behind her. Now no one could interrupt her. She took out a box from within her closet and opened it. Inside was clothes from a childhood friend of hers. The clothes was made of some kind of wool or cotton or such, nothing fine. Just simple and cheap. It was a white blouse with a pair of brown puffy trousers. She wrapped her breast so that they barely showed under the blouse. She put up her hair in a pony-tail and put on a brown hat made by fabric. She looked in the mirror and smiled towards her image. She looked like a feminine boy in these clothes, she thought and smiled wider.
“This is how it’s supposed to be” she said to herself and looked out of the window. She could see the pirate entering the square and then sighed. She wanted to be free! Not just sit there in a chair and look pretty, staying quiet all the time. No, it wasn’t for her at all. She threw herself on the bed and looked up at the roof. Her life was boring, but how many young men and woman hadn’t thought that at least once? A few perhaps? Most just settled with what they had, but some needed adventure. She was one of the latter. But how could she become free?
