Chang Ying's heart warmed a bit.

In her short stay here, the Lu family were nice and polite to her. But they were polite like strangers. They didn't know what to make of this soft town girl at first. They did not scold her, assign her work or ask her to help. Without Lu Chen there, both parties were unsure of how to close the distance. So there was a certain politeness between Chang Ying and her in-laws.

This was the first time Grandpa Lu scolded her a bit and even acted angry. Today, she felt closer to the family than ever.

Her lips turned up in a brighter smile. "Mother, let me help."

Mo Yue looked at her daughter in-law in surprise. "Ying-er, your hand..."

"Mother, I hurt my left arm. At least, I can still use my right hand."

Before Mo Yue could refuse, Jin Ruishi, her granddaughter, ran forward with her short legs to Mo Yue's side. "Granny, we can help too! Uncle Chen told us to help aunty, so we can help, right?"

Mo Yue and Chang Ying exchanged looks and giggled. The little girl was just looking for an excuse to be in the kitchen.

"Okay, but you have to help your aunty, you hear? She mustn't use her hand." Mo Yue gave in.

Jin Ruishi nodded and dashed to pick up a small stool and brought it for Chang Ying.

Chang Ying smiled at the little girl diligently exerting herself to bring the small stool in both her small hands. "Thank you, Xiaorui. Xiaorui is so strong now."

The little girl perked up happily and dropped the stool close to her. "I can carry big stools too and run fast. If aunty needs anything, just tell me."

Chang Ying patted the little girl's head, then sat next to her mother-in-law. Younger children were easier to get along with and forgave a person's past mistakes easier too. Jin Ruishi had seen Chang Ying's unpalatable side before, but once she got excited about something, she didn't mind being around Chang Ying at all.

Lu Ching hung around a few steps way, watching them, not too close but not far at all either.

Chang Ying balanced a tray on her lap and used her right hand to separate the shaft and stones from the rice grains. Her left hand was allowed to rest as needed.

Jin Ruishi looked at the white bandages curiously. "Aunty, does it hurt?"

"It doesn't hurt as much. It's just a little itchy now."

Jin Ruishi had a look of childish inquisitiveness. "Then, will you scratch it?"

Everyone chuckled at the little girl's words. Jin Ruishi looked around and saw the adults laughing, she pouted and grumpily folded her hands across her chest.

Chang Ying pinched the little girl's check affectionately and stretched out her left hand. "See, my hand is bandaged so that I won't touch it and other dirty things don't enter the wound. So no matter how it itches, I can't scratch it or my wound will get worse."

Jin Ruishi puffed her cheeks. "I didn't know before but everyone laughed at me, so mean!

"Sorry, we won't laugh again. It is our fault. Xiaorui is right."

Jin Ruishi nodded, now satisfied. She drew closer to Chang Ying to watch her work. But mostly, the little one's attention was on the bandages. She seemed fascinated by now they were tied.

Lu Ching stared at the back of Chang Ying, alert, as he closely watched her interact with the little girl. His mouth was pressed into a thin line.

Chang Ying noticed his actions but pretended not to know. As expected, it was easier to make up with a little girl than a teenage boy. He was old enough not to accept her change of attitude towards her younger ones immediately.

"Where is everybody else?" Chang Ying asked.

Mo Yue's eldest daughter, Lu Zhi, for certain reasons lived here with her own daughter, Jin Ruishi.

Lu Zhi worked at a small drink factory on the outskirts of town. The pay was low compared to the long work hours and no days off. The conditions were so tasking very few women worked in the factory. Still, in order not to further burden her family and to raise money for Jin Ruishi's primary school tuition, Lu Zhi took this kind of work where she was hardly home to see her child.

"Lu Zhi left for work early again and Feifei went out to sell some snacks she made to get pocket money for the new school semester," Mo Yue answered.

Chang Ying rolled her eyes at the last part. At this point, Feifei had only been reborn a few days ago. She would definitely be eager to start looking around for opportunities to grab. As for the cultivation pearl, Feifei would barely have unlocked the first level of secret means within it.

Feifei was sly, so dealing with the pearl would have to take time. Even exposing her vicious side to others would also take time. Feifei used other to do her dirty work, so before Chang Ying pointed fingers, she had to have substantial evidence. Otherwise, that fake white lotus would cry pitifully and Chang Ying would become the bully instead. That was also why she did not mention that Feifei might be involved in Shu's actions yesterday. What she had to consider now was that man.

She woke up back in their home this morning but there was no sign of him.

She looked at her mother-in-law who showed no signs of saying any more. She coughed and asked, "Where is Lu Chen?"

Mo Yue smiled at her teasingly. "Ah, how can I forget? Your husband is back home now."

Mo Yue finally helpfully supplied an answer. "Lu Chen left around sunrise to go down the valley to pick a few mushrooms to make medicinal mushroom soup for you. I know a very nutritious recipe. Once you drink it, you will heal quicker."

Jin Ruishi lightly tugged Chang things dress for attention. "Uncle Chen told me and little uncle to take care of you when we woke up this morning."

"Oh? Then Xiaorui and Ching-er are doing a good job," Chang Ying praised the little girl.

Chang Ying sighed. Her reputation was cleaned now, but continuing this marriage or not would depend on the basis of both she and Lu Chen. Still, she won't give any one the satisfaction of stealing food from her rice bowl.

Unbeknownst to the Lu household, an enraged woman was matching towards their house.
