"Death comes in many poisons, the most potent being love and betrayal, whose venoms run the deepest, and whose antidotes are shrouded forever in mystery" repeated the man to himself, staring into the eyes of his love through the looking glass. He sighed as a tear ran down his cheek, swiping a hand over the glass and looking into the mirror. Pain shot through his body and tears filled his eyes as memories passed through, as it did every time he used the glass, it used to throw him to the floor for several minutes, he walked to the window's edge in need of fresh air, opening his wings he leaped and embraced the cool night's breeze.
He flew for hours, embracing the familiar caress of the wind. As the sun began to appear over the horizon he looked down to find that he had ended up at their old meeting place again. He dived downward and perched on a branch of the tree that he and his love used to sit beneath for hours at a time, laughing about nothing and enjoying being in each other's arms. He listened to the whispers of the past, breathing the crisp air, looking out over the small clearing. Listening to the low babbling of the creek water flowing past below him. He closed his eyes, a slight smile reaching his lips as their laughter reached him, remembering her scent, the scent of her dogs with a faint scent from her bath, feeling the sensation of her lips faintly against his.
He sat entranced like this for almost an hour, habitually turning the black ring around his finger, when a voice interrupted. "You know it's not good to spend so much time on the past, especially not on your mortal life. It won't accomplish anything but tearing you apart." The voice was deep and flowing, each word leading into the next, yet completely devoid of emotion. He turned to see his mentor laying on a branch opposite him, watching intently, his light brown eyes revealing nothing of his thoughts. Judging by the untidiness of his dark brown hair he had woken up as he was leaving and followed.
He wondered how long Zach had been there, lounging in his loose fit blue jeans and plain white t-shirt. Knowing his mentor, probably since he had perched in the tree. He kissed his ring before replying, his voice distant, full of longing, and still caught somewhere in the past, "I know, but even so, I would rather hang onto my emotions, even this pain, than have nothing like so many of us." He looked out one last time over the field, taking in the gentle hill, the morning dew on the grass, and the stone and wood of the buildings that he had spent so much time in. He sighed before getting up and stretching his wings. "I guess we should head out before the sun fully rises", they both jumped into the air.
The flight home was long and quiet, Zach knew better than to bother him during this week, especially that day. It was November 22nd, the anniversary of the day that had changed his fate, it was best to just let him fly. His thoughts engrossed in the memories and sensations of the past, he would have flown right over the house if he hadn't caught Zach descending towards it in the corner of his eye. He tucked in his wings and turned into a sharp dive, brushing past Zach and snapping his wings out just before reaching the ground, landing with a roll. Zach landed right behind him. "You always were one for big entrances", Zach said to him, a slight smile on his face.
"Zach! Ty! You're back!", they looked up to find a girl who had been waiting for them on the porch jumping up to hug them. Her face wore an excited smile mixed with what he read as worry, her hair was messy and she still wore her pajamas, fuzzy purple pants and a black t-shirt. "Where were you all morning?", she said turning to Ty.
"I was just out thinking", said Ty, turning away and covering his face with his hair. He always felt bad during this time of the year. He glanced at Aria, smiling at her little outburst of excitement, her light brown eyes under her poofy, purple hair. She had a serious case of bedhead. He caught her eye and quickly glanced back away, she was just so adorable, and he had her worried out of her mind. He felt bad that he still doted on the past this week of the year, especially after so long.
Aria was there for him, always made him happy, he just felt bad about being stuck on what he had done, he knew she didn't mind anymore, she understands, but he wasn't okay with it.
Aria knew exactly what was bothering him. She sighed and walked over in front of him. "look", she said, getting close so he had no choice but to look at her face, "you know I don't mind anymore. If you do, let us know and then spend the day out instead of just flying off. Stop feeling bad for me, I don't need it."
Ty just turned and headed into the house. He didn't mean it to be rude, he just didn't have anything to say.
