I fall to the ground and feel something burning in my left calf. Darn. I knew this was a bad idea. I never would have stopped Nichole when she was so determined. I don’t remember her being so confident before she left home even not knowing her very well back then.

I reach back towards my leg and come back with a bloody hand. I’ve been shot. The burning continues along with the gunfire. Nichole is just feet in front of me, trying to get herself up. I try to get up so I can cover her from the bullets but fall back down with new fire burning in my right arm. I continue to get up as if in slow motion when I hear a shout from behind.

“No! Nichole!” The boy yells.

I turn back to see who I think must be Christopher from the way Nichole had described him. If it were a better time, I would punch him square in the nose on the spot for betraying Nichole. Which I find funny since he never did do anything to me exactly.

I finally make it to my feet and awkwardly run towards Nichole. She’s kneeling a little and holding her thigh. Christopher gets there first and jumps in front of her like he’s trying to be some hero. Then I realize that he truly is a hero when he falls to the ground, blood seeping through the back of his shirt beneath his ribcage.

Nichole looks at me, her ocean blue eyes wide, face stricken with fear. She turns to Christopher and rolls him over.

“Chris!” She shrieks. “No, no, no. It’s okay. It’s okay,”

But it’s not. It isn’t okay. I’m not sure if he’s alive, but either way, we need to get away from the danger. I limp over to them both, the gunshots still raging around us. It’s a miracle that I haven’t been hit again. Or maybe just terrible aim.
