Prologue

Cold, shivering, no blankets, we hardly have any clothes to cover our own bodies. There are loud moans of people who have gotten beaten the day before. Scars are everywhere on the backs of innocent people, including me. My name is Alice, but my master doesn't care about my name or myself. He doesn't care about anyone. He looks upon us as if we were dirt that people had walked on. I am ten years old and working in the garden all day and night. Everywhere I walk I see men beating men and hear cries of the women. I haven't seen my mother or my father since the auction that separated me from the rest of my family. I live in South Georgia on a plantation working for the monster, I call my master. I have never learned his actual name. Never have I actually seen the front of his face. He's a white man, a hat always covering the top of his head, and a smile never crossing his lips. This is where my story begins, in the garden, where I work.
