Autumn of 1974
Lancashire, England

'Hester, tell your sister she will be late if she doesn't get up now!'
'Do I have to? She hates it when we wake her up. Especially after...'
'Go now', the mother of 8 looks sternly at her second eldest daughter.
Hester stomps towards the caravan she shares with her sisters.
At this moment, everyone in the camp was wide awake, preparing for the day ahead. Hester and her sisters are clearing up the mess made at breakfast, and her brothers and father are getting started on fixing a wheel on one of the caravans.

Looking down at her sister's flushed cheeks and unruly hair, she was breathing heavily; Hester touches her arm but pulls back instantly as her skin is like fire.
'Get up, Morwenna. You've missed breakfast.'
The 14-year-old reaches for her sister and tugs on her cardigan with her eyes shut tight.
'Please say they left me some food.'
'No, you are getting late for school.'
Morwenna hates school. As the only non-magical member of her family, her parents believe she should attend muggle school.
Morwenna is envious of her eight siblings, that learn magic at home with the rest of the camp. Romani wizards and witches have suffered at both hands of muggles and wizards and prefer to keep to themselves. Therefore they don't send their children to wizarding schools; they are homeschooled, except for Morwenna. They tried including her in the classes, but she always ended up twiddling her thumbs.

Morwenna didn't bother rushing to school since she hated it. She immensely hated the other students there. They torment her for being a traveller and not looking like them; at least at home, she fits in more.
Morwenna being adopted was a known fact within the camp since her family embraced her ten years ago. When Luca found her crying outside the cathedral where she was abandoned, he quickly recognised the Black Maddona necklace hanging around the child's neck; he believed the child was from the camp and had lost her way.
Luca rushed her to his parents, where they soon realised, from reading the note in her pocket, that Morwenna was unwanted.
Luca's parents also became Morwenna's; one more child didn't seem to make a difference to their huge family. Since the child came from Romani blood, they had no choice but to look after her.

Morwenna stumbles out of the caravan whilst trying to fix her school uniform.
'Luca, please hurry up', she storms towards her brother, who is helping their father.
Luca's love for boxing has allowed him to develop a strong figure. He's tall and dark-haired like the rest of his family, with a deep scar drawn across his left cheek upon his handsome face. Luca got this scar when he was around 11 years old. He's never told a single soul and vows he never tell how he came home one day with the injury.
'I can't walk you to school today, you woke up too late, and I need to help Dad'
'I'll wait for you to finish?'
'No, I can't, Morwenna, go yourself' Luca has been in a mood with Morwenna since she accidentally blurted out that Luca fancies a non-traveller girl at her school. Therefore her brother avoids speaking to her, a trivial thing that will blow over after a few days.

Morwenna kicks a clump of grass at Luca and sulks away from her brother, and starts the journey to school. It takes around 20 minutes to reach the entrance of the school. Usually, Luca walks Morwenna to school because of the traveller community's shared fear of racial abuse and discrimination. Morwenna has become accustomed to the insults and abuse, but her mother especially worries, so she sends her with her brothers.
Fortunately for Morwenna, she was gifted in school. She doesn't require effort; she's a natural, but she doesn't see the importance of what she learns; she finds it all very tedious.
'Can you smell that? It must be the dirty gipsy b*tch' Morwenna who walked through the schoolyard with her arms folded, facing away from the pack of boys following their leader, Richard Wilson. Even though Morwenna has abuse hurled at her daily by the likes of Richard and his silly friends, today, they will try to hurt Morwenna differently.

TW: Sexual Assault
  ...

That day wasn't the worst I had ever lived, but it was the start of many misfortunes. My mum has always worried for me, especially over my lack of control. The fact is, I can't help being this way. If I feel the need to say something, I will say it. But honestly, I should have kept my mouth shut that day.  Richard Wilson was the first person I hurt. He spoke about my sister, Gwendoline. My beautiful sister, who has a disability, was mocked, so I may have made a very inappropriate comment about Richard's mother being the village bike etc. etc. etc. I also made him bleed the way Luca taught me.
I left for home before the teachers became aware of the incident. Usually, Luca waits near the school entrance after school, but today Richard and his dogs followed me. There were 5 of them and 1 of me.
I ran as fast as possible, and I was pretty quick. However, today I was not quick enough.
I still don't know who grabbed me from behind, but they were strong and dragged me across the ground. The back of my head was seared with burning pain every time it hit a cobble. Despite this, i tried to fight as I could. Screaming, kicking and throwing my body away from them, but their grip was unyielding. I could feel what they were going to do to me. They were going to be vicious men.
I continued screaming, but it didn't help. Instead, it made it worse. My face was smashed onto the stone floor, my mouth was flooded with blood, and my vision began to blur. But I could still see him, his hands frantically grabbing my body as his friends gathered around for the show. At one point, I managed to get loose and push Richard away. They pounced on me like starving hyenas and held me down, 4 boys pinning down my arms and legs. Richard came down hard on my face. As I turned my face away from it, one of his punches landed on my ear, deafening me. Disoriented, I gave in and squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for it to be over, and it was.
I do not know how long I kept my eyes closed, it felt like forever, but I know it was only for a few seconds.
I finally opened my eyes to see my brother Luca running towards Richard's body. He was lying meters away, unconscious, with his entire body bloodied. His clothes had been burnt and fused to his skin, and his accomplices' hands were in a similar appearance. Luca started at me from across the road. Luca looked scared  I've never seen my brother scared.
