Hayel woke up feeling like she shouldn't go to classes today. But despite her feeling, she knew she couldn't because the director would call Grandmother to tell her about the constant ditching. Hayel didn't want that to happen, so she packed her bags and rushed out the small wooden door.
As Hayel walked out into the street, she automatically knew that something was wrong. The chatter that usually filled the streets was entirely absent. Hayel began to get worried, and she didn't know what to do because there wasn't a single person in sight. She finally decided to continue walking to classes, but she would ask the first person she saw about the silence that covered everything.
But as Hayel walked, nobody came into view. She began to get worried and pickup up her pace. Finally, she couldn't take it anymore and broke in to a run. She ran all the way up the abandoned street and made the turn around the corner at full speed. She was going so fast that she didn't see the person who was just on the other side.
Hayel crashed into the person standing there and fell to the ground. Hayel apologized and got up, but before she could ask what was going on, something caught her eye. Over the man's shoulder, she could see something glowing. Suspended in the air were the words:
"WE HAVE CHOSEN"
Hayel felt a cold fear claw at her heart. when somebody was chosen, there was only one thing that happened: somebody died. what made it worse was that nobody knew anything about the group that did it. Sure, they knew what group it was, but they were so secretive that nobody could find anything.
But the thing that everyone was scared of was extinction. The city of Trinica was the last remaining city on the planet. The reason that everyone was scared was because they hoped for the city to survive.
The group that did these killings was known as the Aela. The only thing that was known about them was that when they chose somebody, that person usually died. that was pretty scary for the entire city, especially since there was no way to know who it was. so that meant that everybody hated them, but Hayel had her own reasons for hating them.
Hayel had grown up with stories of the Aela, but the worst one was when they killed her parents on that dreadful night so long ago. She had been told of that time and it scared her. At the time, Hayel had only been a baby, but that didnt matter. all her life, she had grown up without parents. In her eyes, that just wasnt fair. Hayel didnt want to have to face it anymore, so she turned away from the glowing words and walked up the street to get to her classes: she would not let anything as idiotic as a choosing make her miss more time.
Hayel walked into the hall and tried to quietly sneak into her class; unfortunately, there were those who had other plans. "HAYEL" bellowed the Director. The Director was the coordinator of all classes. He was also the person in charge of the city.
Hayel stopped in her tracks and slowly turned. "Yes?" she asked innocently.
"Where do you think you are going?" the director asked Hayel. "Nevermind," he said before she could answer, "I need to speak with you."
Hayel didn't want to go with the Director, but she had no choice. "Yes sir". She slowly followed him back into his office.
"Sit", he said before continuing. "Ok Hayel, I know you might laugh, but I need you to focus. This is an important part of your life, after all. But enough chit-chat." The Director grew serious. "You only have one more chance to participate in The Ceremony".
