Racing through the familiar streets that she usually walked home on from work, she passed by dozens of people giving her strange and confused glances. But she didn't care. She needed to get home and get as far away as possible from the mall and that boy. Pushing herself harder, she ignored the burning in her chest and kept going. As soon as he looked away, she crept away, and hid behind a couple of cars. Hearing him take off from the parking lot, she took off at full sprint.
All she needed to do now was get home, tell her parents about what happened and call the police so they could go to the mall and look for the guy and make sure everyone was okay. Lena was her main focus. As much as she trusted him to get her out of there, that trust ended when she got out. No way was she going any farther with a killer. Hopefully he wouldn't find her. If he did, the police would already be at her house once she called. They would obviously send officers to the mall, and most likely send one to her house to question her.
Only natural for that to happen.
Running past dozens of storefronts, she quickly glanced inside a wedding boutique, and her heart almost stopped. Inside she saw what looked like a purple cloud floating inside the store with red eyes surrounding a few women, all of them unmoving, almost in a trance.
What happened to the world around her? Why did people drug others so they hallucinated? She couldn't really be seeing things like that. Could she?
Monsters and gods didn't exist outside of fictional fairy tales. Only thing she found factual was the science she studied in and outside of school. Storms, life, death, the history of the planet, all of these things made sense and were logical. Things like magic and monsters and heaven and hell were stories told to children to keep them safe.
Getting to her street, she turned sharply on the curb, almost slamming against a stop sign. Her shadow moved as quickly as she did as the sun lowered to sleep. Getting by a few houses, she stopped in front of a big coffee painted house with a chocolate brown door with a few windows off to the right. Inside the windows a couple sat on couch watching television.
Her parents.
Neither of them had the same hair as her−her dad having black hair and her mom having brown−but she did get her height from her dad. She had different eyes from them as well, vastly different; her right eye shined silver while her left was a dark black. Another reason why people called her a freak. Throughout her life, lots of people questioned if they adopted her, saying she looked nothing like either of them. Both would smile and laugh and always say the same thing; she got a mix of both their looks.
They were kind and caring and very supportive of all she did. When she was younger she would go after different things, sports, dancing, art, and so much more. Through all of it they stood by and supported her, cheering her on. Both of them stood as a rock of protection during the storms of her life, and never wavered. And because of that, she could tell them anything and everything.
It also helped that she never really did anything to lose their trust or respect. She was in every shape and form, the perfect child. Always doing her homework, home on time, never breaking curfew, and always telling them about things that she felt guilty about doing. Because of that they gave her a lot of leeway.
Pushing the door open with intense vigor, she slammed it hard, shaking a few pictures on the wall. A few of them threatening to fall off. Spinning around, she rested against the door, finally able to catch her breath. The burning in her chest slowly fading. No longer did she feel such an intense pressure on her lungs. Skin feeling sticky from all the sweat, she'd have to take a shower after she told them everything.
"Honey, is everything okay?" Her father asked, rising from the couch. Shutting the television off and setting the remote down on the brown wooden coffee table.
