Chase sent text after text to Jackie, to no avail. He tried calling twice and was sent to voicemail both times.
Worse, even Stacy seemed to be avoiding him. Sure, she didn't usually reply fast when Chase texted her. Chase imagined that Stacy would see his name pop up on her phone, wince, and put her phone back in her pocket.
Chase's motivation over the next few days lasted just barely long enough to finish his work. He found himself thinking about the bottles of whiskey tucked in his cupboard downstairs even as he signed off. The curtains were drawn; the house was darker now than Chase remembered it. He rarely felt hungry, or driven, or awake...
The solitude of the last few months was finally taking its toll. Chase took his only company in the vague presence he felt from within his computer, the strange influence untouched by time that he interpreted as Jack, reaching out to him somehow through his videos.
And at night, Chase dreamt of tiny rooms and static screens.
And faint voices...
