You were walking down the block in your city. It was a Wednesday, the day that the fire departments opened their doors to the public and let people help them clean and get to know their firefighters.

You always enjoyed bouncing around departments and helping them clean. You were a big community service person to begin with. Anything that you could do to help, you did it. You enjoyed doing it.

Today you were going to a department that you haven't been to in a long while. It was on the opposite side of the city from where you lived. You smiled as you walked in, ready to help. One guy caught your eye. You'd never seen him before, and you assumed he transfered from a different department somewhere out of the area.

You knew everybody in this department except for him, so you went to introduce yourself. He was cleaning the ladder truck by, it seemed, himself. He was working up a sweat, and for good reason.

He was a slightly darker man, perhaps Latino. He had black curly hair, and a sharp jawline. He had a clean 5 o'clock shadow complimenting his broad face. He didn't seem much older than yourself

You walked over to him and smiled. "Hello. I've never seen you around here before and I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm, (y/n)." You put out your hand for him to shake.

He smiled as he looked up at you. "Hi. I'm Oscar. Nice to meet you (y/n)." He shook your hand.

"It's nice to meet you too Oscar. Are you alone on the ladder? Would you like some help?" You offered.

He smiled. "Yeah, actually, that'd be awesome. You know what to do?"

You chuckled and smiled. "I wonder who's been cleaning trucks longer. Me, or you." You teased.

He laughed. "Well I'd assume me, but, I don't know you."

"My father was the chief of this department. Ever since I could, I helped them in every way possible. I even became a Junior firefighter for this department. I was set that it'd be my career." You sighed.

Clearly it didn't go that way. What you didn't need to tell him was that you were on a call with your father and he went inside of the building, only for it to completely collapse only moments after he went in. You watched it from the tanker.

He chuckled softly. "Then I'd have to say you. If you don't mind me asking, why didn't you go into the full force? Or are you off duty and decided to help out at a different department?"

"No. I didn't go into the force." You sighed and kept cleaning. "Personal reasons."

You wanted off of this subject immediately. "I understand. You still enjoy helping other departments I take it?"

You nodded. "Yeah. I've always been a sucker for community service." You chuckled softly.

One thing you would do forever is stay away from the tankers, especially the one in this department.

Eventually, you both finished cleaning the ladder truck, of course getting to know each other a bit as you did it.

"Hey, I have to do inventory, and I could use some help. You seem to know quite a bit more than I thought you would." You rolled your eyes.

"Yeah. I'll help. I'll probably know where things are better than you." You smirked.

"Alright. Let's go." He chuckled.
