I hadn't realized how late it was and I had to go home and make dinner. "Uhhh bye Robert." He hugged me, I felt like this happened in a past life. I walked down the street light lit sidewalks, "I'm home." No one answered. I went to the kitchen where April usually was making dinner, there was a note but that's about it.
'Dear Lauren,
We went on vacation. There is enough food to last you a while. I left money in the cookie jar and the the car keys as well. No house parties, make sure the house is in good condition. Sorry we only had the five tickets and grandma wanted to go. Be safe, and if Helen shows up tell her something, she doesn't need to know about this. It can be our little secret.
Love the Barners
I found an apple and walked around the empty house. 'Since it was quiet maybe I'd actually remember. Something happened to me, something happened to my family. I needed to know.' I blanked out, another headache the doctor promised these would go away. They'd only get stronger. My room was small, of course I wasn't expecting the attic to be that big but even the devil dog had a room. Nothing--I never had anything. 'Ring', I rushed to the phone and smiled when I heard a familiar voice.
"Hey Jason." I smiled at his name, and felt the blush flare when he said my name. I wonder where Cathleane was...she was supposed to help me find something to wear.
"So Lauren you ready for the dance tomorrow night?" I had totally forgotten, vigorously searching my closet (box) for a dress. Nothing--like I said I hated life.
"Uhh yeah," I defeatedly sat down on a box, pushing back a strand of dark hair. We sat and talked, more so I listened to him talk about himself and how he looked better in warm colors instead of pastels. How we had to match and that we should be on time. How I couldn't talk to certain people. I zoned him out and looked out at the moon, it was brighter than usual making my dank small attic seem more like the glowing of a palace.
I wasn't a princess, I wasn't a duchess, I wasn't worth more than the ragged shoes on my feet. I hung up the phone, and sprawled myself across the bed, drifting into a dark memory.
It was me and a little girl, we were pinky promising to not tell a soul. She was so cute, dark hair and a lovely smile. I only wish I knew what we were saying. The dream steadily went on, we grew up and middle school came and an accident happened. I remembered the first kiss I had gotten from a little boy that me and the girl had met. He had liked her, but I got the kiss. The boy with an amazing, that boy with the dark hair. I woke up in the hospital alone without him. I never saw him again. Then I met Robert. I woke up my hair soaked with sweat, I didn't understand why I even had this dream.
My phone had six texts all from Robert:)
Wake up 7:00
Meet me at the park 7:35
Fine I'm coming over 8:10
Lauren you're lazy-- 9:15
I'm here 9:28
Open the door 9:47
I rolled off the small twin mattress and unlocked the door. He walked in with his morning face going. A scowl and hands jammed in pockets. "Those creeps, leaving you like this." His husky voice hardened.
I sat at the edge of the mattress and pretended not to care."Its fine, I finally get some time alone." My attempts for happiness in this house have been very limited.
"You don't get it, they left you here. They even took the dog before you." When he was angry his eyes lit up like lighting. "I hate those people, I hate how they treat you. I just wish that your--" He always stopped, it wasn't his fault.
Short tempered, his greatest flaw. I loved that about him. "Don't get so worked up. Plus I have something to tell you anyway." His sharp eyes focused on me. I realized I had fallen asleep in my school uniform.
"Fine go for it, but this conversation isn't over." He found an old arm chair and drug it till it was directly across. He sat down and stared.
"Well I remembered something." His eyes sparkled, hands remained steady and a calm complacent face that followed. I always called him "stone cold" since I could remember when we first met, my first year at Almaden High. We had been friends since. "I remembered making a promise with a little boy and we went to middle school, he gave me my first kiss. Then the car accident and everything disappeared. Then I remembered meeting you and I woke up.
An easy going smile spread on his smooth caramel skin. "That is it?" I shook my head. "The little boy do you remember his name? Or what you guys were promising?" I shook my head. "Damnit."
"I'm sorry." He still held that poker face, I couldn't read him. "We gotta get ready for the dance." He walked out, already knowing the drill. I went to the shower, taking my clothes with me. He went outside making one of those world famous mystery calls.
Obviously what I remembered made him happy, at least I could always please him. The dance was tonight and we had a few hours to get ready. Summer Fling--who knew.
