Blood, fresh, dark blood. My blood? Walter’s? How did we get here? Oh, Right. My pain and fear cuts through the numbness of my mind as I recall what had happened.

It was my turn to watch the entrance to the Oracle’s forest. During the day it’s a normal forest safe to roam, but at night it becomes the place of nightmares with creatures unknown lurking in the darkness. You cannot even risk going past the gates’ threshold in case they wait just beyond the tree line.

As I stood there, I heard nothing but the screaming silence of the night.  Suddenly I heard the crunching of boots on gravel, gradually getting louder as they move towards me. It was none other than my Superior and old friend, Walter Light. Something was wrong. He was fully dressed in his battle gear and walking straight towards the Gate, but what disturbed me the most was his eyes, distant with a bluish glow. This was extremely odd as there was no moon to be seen in the cloudless sky.

“Walter.” I call out. No response. “Walter?” I call again as I start moving cautiously towards him. He stopped, briefly glanced my way and proceeded towards the gate. I was told that no one should enter and that I should stop them at all costs, no matter how far they outrank me. As I moved to stop him, he unsheathed his sword and nearly took my head off. “Rene!” He threatened. Shocked, I stood there and watched him enter. Being my oldest and closest friend, I could not let him go in there alone. “If we get out of here alive, I’m making you buy the drinks,” I mumble running after him into our doom.
