Prologue

My whole body was drenched in sweat, causing my hospital gown to stick to my skin My vision blurred, as my stomach heaved, and I started choking on my own blood again. I struggled to cry for help, but all that came out was an incoherent noise. My eyes swept the room, looking for anything familiar. I recognised nothing. Feeling the panic consume me, I blinked, trying to clear my vision, but the tears kept pouring down on my face, as I realized,  I am going to die.

My breath caught as my stomach heaved again, and my body -already weak with fatigue and lack of nutrition- pained as a shiver ran up my body. I tried to contain the liquids, but I gagged, and coughed up blood, covering my bed and gown with the warm, sticky fluid. Just as I let out a mangled scream, a nurse came rushing in, snatching a tray just in time to catch the contents my body had rejected. I looked up gratefully at the nurse, right before I became engulfed in my own  blood again.

When I felt that my body had drained all of its contents, I looked for something to wipe my mouth with. Sensing what I desired, the nurse handed me a towel, while dabbing at my forehead with a cool cloth. I tried to remember where I was.  I felt a sudden head rush as black dots appeared, obscuring my vision. “________, are you feeling okay?” the nurse asked. I looked up sensing the concerned look on her face, “I, I....” I stumbled. The words felt heavy on my tongue. My whole body went numb, and there my ears started ringing. Time seemed to slow down, as my surroundings moved around me rapidly, swirling into a blur. My fingers grasped the thin cotton of my gown; I was hit with a dizzy spell.

The nurse was checking the machine, and I was wondering where my loved ones were. My heart sank like stone. I had been forgotten. My eyelids lowered, and I cradled my head in my own hands. Alone, I was utterly alone. A tremor rocked my body, and I couldn’t hold it in any longer. I let a sob escape. The stress and panic began to overwhelm me. Hearing the machine begin to emit accelerated, high beeps, I started to panic.  Feeling a rush of adrenaline, a new sheet of sweat broke across my forehead. My body strained, and oppression took its toll. My eyelids grew heavy when I remembered someone. Someone with dark, blue eyes. A boy. And that was all I could remember before unconsciousness took over.
