I remember waking to my parents over me crying. Why were they crying? Was something seriously wrong with me? I tried to talk, to ask my parents what was wrong. But I couldn't get my lips to move. I couldn't get anything to move. I tried moving my hand or my foot but they just wouldn't move. I wanted to cry now because I had no idea what was wrong. I blacked out again to the sound of my parents crying.
The next time I woke up I felt different. I didn't feel like Jake Thompson anymore. I started to sit up. Wait I started to sit up, I can move! "Mom, Dad I can move and..." I called out. I scanned the room to only see I was alone. Where are my parents? Did they leave? Or were they just eating lunch? I wanted answers so I tried to get out of bed but alarms went off and I heard people yelling out in hall.
At least five nurses ran in and stopped with a look of disbelief on her face. " Mr. Thompson your awake?" She sound surprised. Why were they asking this? How long had I been out?
"Yes...I guess I am" I began to stand and the nurse that spoke ran forward and pushed me back onto the bed.
"Please do not move sir. Angie please go get the doctor tell him to hurry." The girl she spoke to instantly left the room.
"May I ask where my parents are? I'm sure they would like to hear what the doctor has to say." I asked the nurse whose name tag said Hanna.
"Your parents aren't here. The doctor will explain everything. Just stay still so I can check your heartbeat." Hanna said as she put the cold plate up against my skin.
She finished and all the nurses left the room. I was alone again. I wanted to see my parents. Why couldn't the nurse call them?
I began to stand up again but the door swung open and the doctor walked in. "Hello I'm Doctor Elm and I will explain everything. Feel free to ask any questions but first let me explain what happened to you Jake." The doctor told me.
" Okay but one question before you start what is today?" I asked him.
" Its Thursday December 15, 2008. You've been in a coma for ten years and nobody ever expected you to...." I interrupted him.
"Wait what! I've been in a coma for ten years?" I yelled at the doctor yelled.
"Yes, now don't interrupt me anymore." I nodded and he continued on,"the day you hit your head it sent waves through your brain signally you to go into a coma. We tried everything to bring you out. But nothing worked after trying many things for two years." He paused to let me take this in." After that your parents decided to let nature take its course. Your parents gave up and stopped coming except maybe every other month to see you. After you turned eighteen two years ago they just stopped coming all together." He paused again and this time longer.
As we sat in silence all I could think is why did they stop coming? I wanted to ask the doctor but knew he asked me not to interrupt and to ask questions at the end of his explanation.
He continued on," You have two siblings now. A sister and a brother. They have never been told about you. But you have had one visitor who has come everyday. A girl I think her name is....Anna. She claims to be a friend but I'm not sure. Now any questions." The doctor asked me.
"Yes one. Can I call my parents and talk to them?" I asked him.
"You can call one of them," he paused for a minute," your father died a week ago in a car accident Jake."
