The darkness of the midnight sky enveloped the vast span of the rooftop, including a semi-drunk silhouette. With the moon being the only source of light at the top of the colossal, four-storey house, the cemented rooftop revealed the appearance of the afore mentioned silhouette.
Despite the cool air, the person looked unfazed by the night chill.
Leaning over the wall that looked down the ever-awake city below, was a young woman. She wore a royal blue, silk button down with the top two buttons undone, revealing a black shirt. A pair of black slacks and matching strappy high heels finished off her attire. Long, dark hair were loosely tied at her nape that ruffled a many strands free as the wind picked up.
Skyler twirled the shot glass in her hand, watching the liquid slosh around, rippling of its own droplets. She stared as the ripples slowly ceased, stillness and calm taking over. After coming out of her trance, she sighed and a smiled lightly.
I'm being so oddly... "Philosophical, " she muttered.
She sighed, looking up at the scarcely lit night, debating for a while whether to get drunk or not before deciding the latter. HangShe has to return to the party anyways or Emily would be worried. Just her name shot a sharp stab in her heart and the corner of coral-tinted lips lifted into a forlorn smile.
The beautiful red head came to her mind and before Skyler's heart could flutter in love, another figure appeared beside Emily and pain jammed her mind again.
A very handsome man with kind blue eyes and a stature that oozed with masculinity and authority. Ebony black hair swept away from his face, Natural pink lips pulled into a warm smile as he wound his arm around Emily, long and sturdy fingers resting on her small waist.
"Oh my God, Annie!" Emily whisper-yelled in shock.
"What," was Skyler's reply as she internally rolled her eyes at her nickname. When Emily didn't reply, she looked up from her book and across the room to find Emily. She was seated on Skyler's desk chair and staring wide-eyed at her phone, a hand covering her mouth and eyes glistening.
Skyler's protective instincts immediately kicked in and she jumped off the bed, appearing beside her best friend in an instant.
"Em, what's wrong? What is it? " Concern turned to confusion when Emily grinned happily, blinking the moisture from her eyes.
"Nothing's wrong, Annie. Actually, look! Look!" Emily shoved her phone in Skyler's hands, practically buzzing from what seemed like excitement.
'Weirdly cute' Skyler thought amused, admiring her flushed cheeks and bright eyes before she looked away at Emily's phone.
She wished she didn't.
They were chats between Emily and her crush, Jasper Finn, confessing his deep love for Emily.
She didn't expect a cold wave of an unknown emotion to wash over her. Was it disappointment? Or fear?
Frozen shell shock, Skyler barely felt Emily's arms go around her as she vibrated with glee, mumbling how happy she is. How unbelievable it is that her crush finally liked her back. That it would kill her if her feelings were unrequited.
Skyler automatically wanted to tell her that Emily deserved it. To have her imagined unrequited feelings returned. To have found the love she longed for.
It was painfully hypocritical of Skyler to even think so given she wouldn't ever experience the exhilarating feeling of being equally loved by someone she selfishly wanted. It was greedy, but she'd still wanted it. Wanting to hold onto that sliver of a hope for a little while longer, all the while preparing for the fall that was sure to come.
But watching it actually happen in reality... it hurt too much. As if the feeling of eternal loneliness has clouded over the hope to love again, or ever move on.
But this. This was reality.
And Skyler had to face it positively. For Emily.
During Emily's rant, Skyler had somehow managed to hug her back and display the happiest, fakest smile she could muster.
"That's great, Em."
And that time, Skyler masked away all the pain. Instead just being happy that Emily found her happiness. Laughing by her, as she shooed away her dejected heart to be there for her. Even only as a friend. Because when you truly love someone you'll do anything for them to remain the smile on their face, no matter what. You'll always let them live their happy ending.
And Emily was Skyler's first love.
So she let Emily have her happy ending.
Even if it wasn't with her.
