CHRISTMAS DAY HAD ARRIVED, AND WINNIE WAS HAPPY TO SPEND THE MAJORITY OF IT WITH HER FAMILY.
Her family Christmases were always delightful, full of energy, games, and surprisingly good food. Winnie and her uncle got to make their annual music video to "Tootsie Roll" by the 69 Boyz (weird tradition, but that's what made it fun).
They were also celebrating Winnie's birthday that was in less than a week. She was actually going on a surprise trip with Clay, who had rented them a little cabin up in Vermont. It was a big step for their relationship, but she was ready for it.
"Winnie, you better come over as soon as you get back from the trip! And bring the boy, I liked him from Thanksgiving!" Winnie's aunt ( who was over at her parents house at least once a week ) hollered.
"Yeah, yeah! Bye mom, bye everyone! See you soon! Stay safe!" Winnie announced, holding Twix's leash and the box of presents she had received.
She loaded the gifts into her trunk, letting Twix into the passenger seat and rolling the windows down so the dog could enjoy the wind.
Once she arrived at Clay's, it was about 3 P.M. She knocked on the door once, and he answered in a few seconds.
"Merry Christmas!" he greeted, happily greeting her with a hug.
He wore a sweatshirt and white collared shirt underneath, an outfit she had encouraged him to wear. It looked great, combined with his grown out hair.
"Merry Christmas to you," she uttered softly, holding her arms around him as he pressed a kiss to her forehead. Twix walked on into the house, heading straight to love on Patches. The two had formed an unexpected bond.
"You know you didn't have to get me a present, right? I mean, look at the amount of fucking fanmail I have!" Clay exclaimed, motioning to the huge stack of boxes in the corner of the kitchen.
"I have that too, don't worry. And getting you a gift is a necessity. I already mailed George, Nick, Karl, and Niki theirs.
"Fine, fine," he grinned down at her, shutting the door behind her while she walked over to the counter and sat on it. She had always had a thing for sitting on platforms, and never actual seating arrangements.
"So, I'm guessing you got me a gift too? Mine is kinda lame, not even gonna lie," she teased him, poking his arms while he came over to finally kiss her.
As they parted he rolled his eyes, "I already told you, any gift is ok. You could bring me a bag of Twix's old shit and I'd frame it above my bed."
"SIMP ALERT!" she screamed, making Patches aware of her arrival. The cat nimbly jumped up onto the counter and nuzzled against her.
"Ok, ok, now try my cookies. I followed this wack ass recipe," he demanded, shoving the cookie towards her mouth. She took a bite, the chocolate melting on her tongue.
She hummed in delight, and pulled his neck toward her so his lips could find her own. Twix practiced the trick she had been taught, coving her eyes with her paws whenever Clay and Winnie kissed.
"Yes!! Good dog!" she cheered, jumping off the counter and hugging the growing puppy.
Clay giggled at the sight, picking up Patches and holding her to his chest. He sat the cat down then headed to his room, grabbing the gift from her down from his closet shelf.
He came back and she was rubbing Twix's stomach, but she stood up when she saw him enter with the wrapped box.
Winnie grabbed her small box for him off the marble countertops, exchanging her box for his.
"I'm really curious now," she uttered, hearing something flat shift around.
"Open it!"
"Count of three?"
"1."
"2."
"3."
They both tore open their boxes, and Clay grinned at his. Winnie had gotten them a custom pair of rings, presumably promise rings, with their own engravings on it. His had the Yang side of the Yin & Yang, while her's had the Yin.
His gift to her was in a small box. When she opened it, a piece of folded paper fell out. Under it was a necklace, a long rectangle with an engraving of a Spotify playlist on it.
She picked up the paper and read the letter written on it.
Winnie,
I wasn't exactly sure how to word this or
write this in general, but there are lots of
things I want to tell you. On the necklace,
there's a Spotify playlist made uniquely for
you, made up of all the songs that remind
me of you. Some are songs from high school,
and some are newer ones. You were the first girl I ever thought about love
with. I was young and weird as hell, but I think
something in me knew that you would be
important to me one day. And here we are, and
here I am, still feeling like that. I can't thank you
enough for sticking around. Hope to have you on
the rest of my journey.Merry Christmas,
C
"Clay..." Winnie breathed out, a tear rolling down her face. He only wiped it away with his thumb.
"I'm guessing you like it?"
Through a small sob, she looked up at him and rolled her eyes, "do the tears on my face make you think I hate it?"
He chuckled, pulling her into his abdomen for a warm hug.
"Merry Christmas."
"You too," he answered, adjusting the ring to fit perfectly on his finger.
