Chapter 1:
I looked out the plane's window, shuddering. It wasn't from the cold but from the thought of crashing.
Back in Alaska, my home, we had small low-tech planes. Sometimes, the weather took an unexpected turn and you found yourself in a snowstorm.
Not everybody made it out alive.
Now, I was in one of those very same planes. To my relief, we had not gotten stuck in a snowstorm. Me, Mamma, Papa, and my dog, Pepper were flying to Mexico. My parents were explorers. They traveled the world and studied animal fossils, which is why we lived in Alaska.
Just recently, they made a new discovery. They said it was a reptile fossil, one that was extinct. Taking DNA samples, they found it originated from Mexico. So, before I knew what was happening, we were packing our bags and heading there.
Even though I was 16, I had no say in staying or not. Which irritated me greatly. Here we were, moving and traveling like, every year. Once I finally made a few friends or started to fit in in school, I was dragged away to some entirely new place. I wasn't even allowed to call my parents something like mom or dad. no, It had to be Mamma and Papa.
I hated it. Every last bit of my life.
"Aria," Papa said my name, jolting me out of my thoughts, "We are landing soon. Make sure you're buckled, kay?"
I groaned. Of course, I was buckled. Who would be stupid enough to not be while flying? I wanted to say this but I knew it would get me in more trouble.
So instead, I gave a quick reply "Yes Papa,"
Pepper whined in my lap as we started to come closer towards the ground. I closed my eyes, pushing the sound silencing headphones closer to my ears as a deep roaring sound filled the air. I jolted forward in my seat as the wheels hit the ground, and we slowly slowed down.
"We're here!" Papa declared as someone from outside opened the door.
No freaking duh.
"Finally! I was starting to get airsick" Mama complained.
Welp that's your problem, I thought as I grabbed my bag and headed outside.
***
I stepped outside, surprised when I was met by a blast of warm, hot air.
This is so different from Alaska.
A man in a grey suit with cream brown skin stepped towards me.
"Can I have your bag, Ma'am?" I grinned as he said Ma'am, nodding and holding out my bag.
While he loaded it, I turned my attention to around me. We were still at the airport, but all around me was flat sandy land. Reaching into my bag, I pulled out a pair of new sunglasses, ripping the tag off. I smiled bigger and placed the sunglasses on.
I could get used to this.
Still holding Pepper, I reached over and clipped on his leash. I set him down on the ground, but quickly pulled him up when he let out a yelp of pain.
"Sorry, bud. Guess we both aren't used to the heat, huh?" I murmured to him, petting his grey, white, and black head.
Papa, who had overheard me, raised an eyebrow. "He can't understand you, you know."
