Tapping the testing device against the palm of my hand, more out of nervousness than impatience, I found myself pleading against biology. 'Please don't have two lines, please just one. Not two, not two.' I held a breath to look at the windowed device. 'Well, shit, Erin. That didn't even take the full amount of time.' I knew what the outcome would be beforehand, of course. It had been nearly two months since that weekend with Darren and I have already missed two periods. I'm not ignorant in the ways of procreation and lots of girls get pregnant their first time; or seventh as the case may be, so it really wasn't a surprise at all. The problem was how on earth was I going to tell my parents? My classmates and coworkers will be all to happy that their 'goody-two-shoes' friend got herself knocked up. But how am I to explain a pregnancy to my rather devout Christian parents when they think I'm a good little virgin waiting for marriage and completely single, as in not dating anyone, nor am I really interested in anyone at the moment. Okay, that's a lie, obviously; but I can't be with him. Why? Because he is getting married, I mean GOT married. 'Geesh, Erin, Get that through your head!' Married. He's already married. ugh!
That's right, married. And not to me, clearly. He, at the ripe old age of twenty-four, is now married to the sixteen-year-old daughter of the governor! Grr. And he said I was too young for him once upon a time! At least I'm legal now. Oh, I guess she's actually seventeen now, but still, talk about cradle robbing. I know, it's a long story, but I'll get into that later.
My family and I, having received and RSVPed to the invitation to what was supposed to be his wedding, but now is his wife's baby shower, are packing for the trip. Yes, I said baby shower. I can't honestly say I really want to go. Just the thought of seeing that young, round bellied stranger hanging off the arm of my Darren... well, not 'my' obviously. Ugh. This is just so stupid! Yes, I knew he was engaged at the time we had our little interlude, but that was kind the reason it happened in the first place. Pretty messed up huh?
