Chapter Two

4 Years Later

I woke up to knocking at my door. 

" Come on girl, morning patrols!" Jessie shouted from the other side of the door.

" I'm up!" I shouted annoyed.

" Thought I was gonna have to break down your door. I've been banging on the damn thing for an hour and a half."

" Sorry. I haven't been feeling well. Especally what happened last night." 

" I heard. In a world fullofcanabulistic,fungus growing monsters, Seth still desicdes to be homaphobic." 

" I could've taken it,but Dina-" 

" She's still in the imfermary. Seth however, still scott free."

" Fuckin seriously? He almost killed her!?"

" Maria's still getting an ear full from Joel and Tommy, don't worry." 

I cocked my pistol and opened my door tofind Jessie with a cut lip. " Thought you were over biting your lipse." 

He looked down at my fingernails. " Thought you stopped to." 

" Kinda hard after, you know."

" Agreed." 

" Hey, guys." Kat's voice said from inside the greenhouse. 

" Hey." Jessie gurgled.

Kat noticed I wasn't in a good mood. " I'll seeyou guys later." 

" Yeah." 

We rounded the corner. " You guys still on good terms?" 

" Yeah."

" Alright. I'll get us some supplies, meet me at the horse stable." 

" Kay." 

" You alright?" Ebon asked as I made my way towards the stable.

" Yeah Eb. Just got a lot of stuff on my mind." 

" Okay. I'm gladyour alright. Seth's not nice."

" I'll see you later, alright?"

" Yeah. Tell Dina I said hiwhen you go to see her."

" Will do." 

" Morning Ellie." Wyette said, walking into the stable.

" I'll get them. It'll be a few minutes."

" Alright. Uh Quill wanted you to come by later. Said she has something for you."

" You mind bring it around for me? I'm scheduled for a lot of stuff for the next few weeks."

" Yeah, no problem." 

I grabbed Shimmer's brush and started brushing her, making sure I was near the airfow of the fire that was going so I didn't freeze to death. 

I zoned out, not remembering how much time Jessie was gone.

" Sorry that took so long." Jessie said, coming into the stables.

" It's fine. Tommy doesn't have us running on a schedule."

" Speaking of Tommy he told me we're gonna have to ride together. Horse shortages and all."

" Alright, let's get going." 

We hopped onto Shimmer and treaded towards the gate where we were met by Joel.

" You all know the drill, no point in going on a ramble." 

Joel looked over to me as the gate opened.

I nodded and we road off along with the other partols. 

" Ellie!" I heard Ebon yell. 

" Yeah?" I asked, looking for him. 

" I'm supposed to be joining you on the patrol. Maria's bubbling down." 

He was coming up behind us.

" I'll get-" Jessie started.

" I don't mind walking." 

" No, really man. It's fine."

" Jessie hopped off and insisted Ebon ride with me.

" Come on Eb." I said. 

He hopped on and I handed Jessie the rope so he wouldn't fall behind on Shimmer's pace.

" Does seems like Quill's mad?" 

" Ebon." Jessie said. 

" It feels weird." 

" You can say it." I said. 

Ebon tightened his grip on me. " Does it seem... like Quill's mad at me?"

" She's not mad at you," Jessie insisted. " She's pregnant, that's just what happens."

" Why can't she be a happy? Like your Mom was. I wish she was."

" She's not mad at you, I promise, ok?" I told him. " I'll talk to her."

" No, no, then she will be mad at me."

" I'll be fine."

" OK."

Ebon rested his head on my shoulder. 

I know he was exhausted, so Jessie and kept quiet. 

We crossed through Millbrook, then past the ski lodge, following the East creek to the north, then the south, and Jessie went in to sign off on the patrol while I waited outside. 

I loved Ebon with everything I had. I know Quill can be a bitch, but she shouldn't take everything out on him.

" Clear?" I asked as Jessie came back.

" Yep." 

Jessie turned Shimmer around and we headed back to camp.
