My feet stung like hell, as did my throat. We had been walking for what seemed like hours, as the sun was beginning its descent towards Mother Earth again. Little to no conversation was made between Dream and I, only short commands on where to go and to occasionally duck down when they happened to run into a monster in the shadows of caves. The bag of supplies had been passed to me, and now was filled with bits of iron and even the occasional diamond from when we'd found a particularly long tunnel.
I stumbled along the gravel ridden ground of the cave system, following Dream just as I had this entire time. We'd stopped for a short break not long ago, yet I still felt exhausted. The masked man, however, showed few signs of slowing other than sweat that stuck to his palms. How often did he do this, to be so unaffected by the long and grueling day? Hell, he'd done most of the work today!
I was leaned against a stone wall, silently going through the bag to pass time, until I heard the chink of metal and a shout of triumph from Dream. A glance up showed me what he was so excited about; the seemingly small tunnel system they entered had before been walled off from a rather massive ravine, or at least it was walled off until the other had revealed it. He waved me over and began climbing down, to which I followed. Already I could see bits of iron, gold, even small lumps of lapis, sitting at the bottom of the crevice in the stone. No wonder Dream was eager to get down, there was sure to be more valuable minerals as they went deeper.
Meticulously I made my way down as he dropped to the ground, watching me with his arms crossed. "Think you could pick up the pace?" he asked in irritation as I inched my way closer.
I grit my teeth and was about to bite back at him... but my foot slipped.
My mouth opened in a silent shout of fear as I tried to save myself, hands cutting into jagged stones for hope of something to grip on, and I started falling. It wasn't incredibly far, but the ground below would be unforgiving to my already tired body. I stiffened, bracing for impact, and didn't hear the pounding of shoes against ground that echoed below. Suddenly, just as I was expecting to feel pain shoot through me, I was hit from the side and thrown off course as something held me tightly. My eyes were screwed shut, but in that one moment we were airborne I could feel hands grip me protectively around me while my thoughts went rapid fire.
Dream?
We fell into a small pool of water, softening the blow by tenfold but knocking my breath out. He pulled me to the edge of the pool as I coughed and spit the murky liquid out. For a few minutes we sat there in silence, catching our breath and squeezing our clothes to dry them out as best as we could in the situation, before Dream laughed. "Remind me to never rush you again..."
I scoffed, but couldn't contain a small smile. My amused expression fell, however, when I looked over to him. He was rolling his pant leg up to look at a large bruise that was already forming on his ankle. Had he twisted it while saving me? I gave him a look of concern and stood up, before offering him a hand. "C'mon, you can come back here another time. Do you think you need help walking?"
He looked up, even without seeing his face I could tell he was surprised. It nearly made me roll my eyes; I still consider us enemies, yes, but he had just saved me from what would probably be a couple broken bones at the very least. To not help him after the man had risked himself in such a way would make me a dickhead.
After some thought, Dream took my hand and I helped him stand. Immediately my arm went around him, and slowly we made our way upwards. This time I chipped away at stone to make an incline upwards- it was painstakingly slow, but much safer than any attempt we could make to climb.
By the time the cave's exit was in sight, it was clear that night was on its way. I was practically carrying Dream by now, and he seemed on the edge of falling unconscious. Obviously, we wouldn't fare well outside like this. So, reluctantly, I lowered the mask man to the ground near a wall and started fishing through our bag. Out came some food, just bread and fruit for now, and an unlit torch. My hands shook so badly... we needed rest, and soon. So I shoved down the swirling, sleepy fog that surrounded my brain, and got to work.
Within a few minutes, a fire was started and food had been split between us. As Dream devoured an apple, I watched him with concern. We had nothing to wrap his ankle in, meaning it could heal incorrectly. But there was nothing to do but hope. If he were to have some type of permanent injury, from this continuous use of his injured ankle and the inability to take care of it... I shuddered to think of the reactions of his friends. They already would be peeved at the fact we weren't back by this evening.
Would they think I had escaped, maybe even hurt Dream on purpose? It could be possible. My eyes drifted away from the injured man as I thought about it more. In fact, getting away right now would be easy. He couldn't give chase, not in this condition. I could go home... and put my friends in so much more danger. God, I'm so selfish to even consider this. I buried my face in my hands and groaned.
Dream and his bloody band of idiots truly had me under their thumb.
Speaking of Dream, the man had fallen into a restless sleep already. I would admit, I was surprised- surely it was just because he was too hurt to consider the same possibilities as I had, and not trust, right? No, they may have helped each other but that gave no reason to trust each other. I shifted uncomfortably as I tried to assure myself, though why I was so worried about it in the first place was a mystery. Maybe I just needed to sleep as well, my mind was getting far too dizzy and caught up in itself...
I took my still damp overcoat off, bundling it into a pillow of sorts, then laid down. Almost immediately, I was out like a light.
