As I made my way through the crowd I ran into a guy a bit taller than me with brown hair who looked about a year older than me. “Watch where you’re going,” he hissed.

I scurried away from him and continued towards Ryan. “Ryan!” I yelled as I got closer.

“What the hell are you doing here?” Ryan scolded me. “Now you’re going to be thrown out of City! You idiot!”

I looked down, maybe this wasn’t the best idea. “I-I’m sorry, I couldn’t stand not being with you, so I ran here.”

He sighed and started looking around. “Well, now you’re stuck getting thrown out with the rest of us.”

I tried not to make eye contact as he led me towards a group of people who were our age.

The guy that I bumped into earlier stood there talking with a girl. That girl was Maddie.

I walked towards her and the guy. “Maddie?” She turned to look at me. Her eyes widened.

“Valerie! Oh my gosh.” She threw her arms around me, “why are you here? I didn’t see your name on the-“

“She followed into the crowd,” Ryan said from behind me.

I looked away feeling ashamed. “Why would you do that?” Maddie looked at me with sad eyes.

“I couldn’t stand not having Ryan around,” I mumbled.

“Well, at least we will be together,” she smiled. Maddie always looked at the bright side. “I failed the strength test, I was too strong.”

Yes they do throw you to outside if you’re too strong or too smart because they don’t want you to try and start a protest or something like that.

The rude guy cleared his throat. “Oh yeah! This is Zach, he um failed the personality test, like Ryan.” I nodded towards him when another guy ran over towards us.

“Hey guys! There getting ready to uh boot us out,” I remembered this boy, his name was Jordan, he used to be in my math class. He had messy brown hair and green eyes, usually he was quiet in class, but he would always help me if I didn’t understand any of what they were teaching us.

We all followed him to the group of people waiting for the undesirable moment, we would never see any of these people again.

Guardians came over and tied all of our hands so we could not fight back against them.

The leader of City then stood at the podium to say the same speech he has spoken for the last 10 years.

“We are gathered here today to banish those who have not followed rules, not been smart enough, strong enough, or have not had the right mind set. We do this so that we will not fall apart again, even if this means our people have to be thrown to outside. Our differences matter and without differences we will become the strongest, smartest, and kindest of our people. Remember that if you become like these sorrowful people,” he gestures to us, “you will be punished in the same way.” He then turns his body towards us.

“Good luck in the outside, because this is what you deserve.” He steps off of the arena and returns to the large crowd watching all of us.

I am then shoved by a guardian and fall to the ground. Why were they treating us so badly? “Walk,” he demands.

I struggle to stand up and walk out of the gate.

As soon as all of us are outside the gates shut. That is the last time I will see my home, my city, and my friends.
