The car ride is silent as I watch the trees pass me by. My mom looked over at me with a worried expression but I only ignored her. She just got married to my new step dad and now we have to move in with him and my new step brother Kaleb. My life back home in Kansas was perfect up until five years ago when my dad died.

My dad died in a car accident and it's all my fault. He was on his way to my school to pick me up. My mom always tries to assure me it's not my fault but it's hard for me to believe that. My new step dad is an asshole. He treats me like shit and my mom lets it slide. It hurts me the way he treats my new brother as well.

Kaleb is only 12 and I feel awful for him that he has an asshole of a father. I grabbed my phone from my lap and turned the music up louder to drown out the voice of my mother on the phone with my step dick George. Minutes later we pulled into the driveway of my new home. A sigh escaped my lips as I turned off my music and climbed out of the car.

"Honey just give him a chance." My mom pleaded with me. Which did anger me a bit because I have countless times.

"Mom that's all I've been doing and he's still a douche," I told her. She rolled her eyes just as he walked out of the house with Kaleb under his arm. He gave my mom a smile and a kiss on the lips before turning his attention to me.

"I'm so happy to see you again Amelia."

"That makes two of us," I fake smiled before grabbing some bags from the trunk and making my way inside. George has a pretty good amount of money from his job as a surgeon. He is a doctor which is one of the things that drew my mom in. My mom is a nurse and got transferred here to Beacon Hills.

I'm beyond happy for her but my life is in Kansas with my family and friends. I have nothing here in California except my mom. Tomorrow is my first day of school and I'm going to be completely alone. My new brother isn't even in high school yet. So he is going to be in the middle school while I'm stuck alone in the high school.

Makes me wish I had some friends here. A sudden thought occurred to me and I rushed outside where George stood helping my mom grab boxes. "Can I go into town, maybe meet some girls my age?" I asked. They exchanged glances before my mom sighed.

"I'd rather you stay home and help us unpack." She told me but before I could protest my stepdick chimed in.

"She'll be fine for a couple of hours. It might help her make some new friends and get situated here in Beacon Hills."

That made me frown wondering why he was being nice. Ever since I met the guy he's been a complete asshole to me and his own son. Kaleb is a pretty good kid and he's a great step brother. Thankfully my mother agreed with him as she always does and let me drive into town. As I drove my eyes glanced around at all the shops, diners, and whatnot.

I even passed the hospital my mom is going to be working at. About twenty minutes passed and I stopped outside of a small coffee shop. It's cute and what made it even better is there's a book store inside it. The various options made me feel a little overwhelmed. Someone must have noticed that on my face and spoke up.

"So many choices." The voice behind me spoke. Turning my head, I saw a girl standing there with a warm smile on her face. "I'm Lydia," she held her hand out for me to shake.

"Amelia." I accepted her handshake and tried not to smile so awkwardly. Once our hands disconnected she pulled out a book from one of the shelves and handed it to me. "This one is a must." She said.

She handed me a book about werewolves and I raised an eyebrow at her. A smirk danced on my lips while reading the title of it. "I'm not really a believer in the supernatural." I chuckled.

"Maybe this will open your mind a little more. Beacon Hills is known for more than just what meets the eye." She winked at me playfully. "Anyway I've gotta go but I'll see you around." And with that she left the building. After that weird encounter I rented the book and bought a small coffee before heading home.

Hopefully she's right about this book because I rented it for the next four days. I'm a big reader so it won't take me long to finish it. One of my favorite past times is to read. When getting home I went right into my bedroom and started to unpack some things. The sun started to set quickly and I wasn't anywhere close to being done.

So after dinner I decided to lay in bed, which is only a mattress because my bed frame and box spring hasn't arrived yet, and read the book Lydia suggested. She seemed like a nice enough girl, a little odd, but nice. Somewhere deep down in all of us we're a little bit odd. Eleven rolled around and I was on the tenth chapter. That's when I knew I had to get some sleep for my first day tomorrow.

Only anxiety crept into my mind thinking about it. Instead of worrying over something I've got no control over I just closed my eyes and soon enough drifted off into a deep sleep.
