Chapter two

It's about four AM when Alaina wakes me. I get up immediately, and go to stand by the window. I glance back at the bed, Alaina's already sleeping, and probably will be until at least ten thirty. I begin to wash the dishes, and accidentally cut my finger "Ouch!" I exclaim. I look down at my finger, the cut is small. I tie a tiny piece of cloth around it and continue doing the dishes. When I finish I begin to clean the entire hut, from top to bottom, and insulate it, getting ready for winter.

I'm stuffing rags in between the bottom of the wall and the floor when I hear a noise. I jerk my head up and run to the window, there are three men coming down the road, guns in hand. I back up and shake Alaina. She doesn't wake up. I shake her again. Nothing. I run up to the door and look at the men, they're walking right towards us. I can see their clothing more clearly now, they are wearing what looks like the wardrobe of a thief. I shudder. They stop at the shack next to ours, and enter. I hear a loud noise and a scream. They come out empty-handed. Why would they be doing this if they don't want any thing? But then again, why would they be robbing the poorest of the poor if they did want something? I watch as they enter the house across from us. I hear a gunshot. What am I doing, I know these people! But how on earth could I help them?  I don't know  but I know I'll have to try. I run out of my shack and into my neighbors, I see the three robbers standing over Lee's body. Sweet, five year old Lee. They shot him. I look up at the men, their expressions are of pure glee. I take one, deep, shaky breath and lift my hand. The fall to the ground, dead. I fall to the ground.
