Prologue

Anaya quickly ran down the street, her office bag banging into her side with what it seemed like every step. She could already hear her boss scolding her as she entered the office of "Montgomery's Car Parts". Mr. Montgomery, a tall, thin man with jet-black hair and smooth, baby-soft hands, was the owner and founder of his own company. Anaya Smith was an average height woman with short blonde hair and blue eyes. She was always running late to her meetings because she kept getting held back by the late bus. This morning she had had to run to work because the bus had been off-scheduled. As Anaya entered the meeting room, Mr. Montgomery stared at her, pausing his lecture on how to make "Montgomery's Car Parts" earn more money.

"You're late, Miss. Smith. Again." Mr. Montgomery scowled at her.

"I know, I'm so sorry! It won't happen again, I promise!" Anaya quickly sat down in her chair, setting her office bag to the side and starting to grab papers and spread them on her part of the table. Mr. Montgomery continued his speech. Anaya half-listened, her mind buzzing with all the lack of sleep she'd been getting. Before she knew it, the meeting was done and everyone had already packed up and left. Anaya scrambled out of her seat, hoisting paper after paper into her bag. Before she could rush out the door, Mr. Montgomery stopped her.

"Yes, Sir?" Anaya spoke softly, slightly afraid of what her boss might say to her.

"Miss. Smith. You have been late to work and meetings more times than I can count."

Anaya's words flowed together, her voice ecstatic with desperation.

"I know! I'm sorry, Mr. Montgomery! Like I said, I promise it won't happen again! I've been missing the bus to work and this morning it was off-scheduled so I had to wait an extra few minutes and-" Mr. Montgomery held up a hand turning away.

"Enough Miss. Smith. I have heard this time and time again, but this is pushing the limits. When you showed me your resumé it said that you were always, always, early to work! You have been late for practically every meeting we have had!" Anaya opened her mouth to apologize once more but Mr. Montgomery spoke first.

"You're fired, Miss. Smith. I expect your office to be cleaned out by tonight. Understood?" Anaya gasped, tears finding their way to her eyes and down her cheeks.

"N-no! Sir, please! Please! I promise I'll work harder! I'll get up earlier! I'll skip breakfast! Please! Don't fire me!" Mr. Montgomery glared at her, his dark brown eyes blazing.

"Am I understood?" He said again, this time more fiercely. Anaya looked at the ground, and nodded.

"Yes, sir." As Mr. Montgomery left the office, Anaya turned back to her mess, holding back tears as she swept her papers into her bag. Then she walked slowly to her office. Papers and litter were strewn everywhere. She picked up everything, not bothering to throw away the garbage. She took it all away in a cardboard box and as she walked out of "Montgomery's Car Parts" she looked behind her. Sighing, she started walking. People were walking all around her, some running to get to their destination on time. If only I could have done that. Anaya thought.

Suddenly, a force knocked her off her feet. Her box of supplies flew everywhere on the rain-ridden sidewalk with feet stepping all over them. Anaya scrambled to her knees, trying hastily to collect her office papers when a hand reached out to her. Anaya looked up to see a tall, skinny man with curly ginger hair and bright green eyes. He shook his hand a little, gesturing for Anaya to take it.
