"You're absolutely hilarious."

"What?" Jake laughed and flipped his hand through his hair. Charlie stared at him and then grabbed his leg and pulled him in the water.

"Seriously, Charlie?" he looked at her, annoyed. It was obvious he was trying to hold back laughter.

"That's what you get for pushing me in the water first," Charlie replied.

"Wow."

THERE WAS A TIME WHEN JAKE EDMONDSON WAS A GREAT PERSON. Honestly, he may have been one of the best friends Charlie ever had. Charlie first saw him in a coffee shop in downtown London. She was ordering her usual white chocolate mocha when their eyes met. She was charmed by the darkness in them. He was probably one of the most charismatic people she had ever seen.

They sat down and talked for hours. Charlie never really paid attention to the dark energy surrounding him. Yeah, he was kind, but he always had a darkness around him. It was like all of his emotions were fake. Almost as if he was completely numb.

Yet still, she thought he was a great person. If she had known where she'd be today, she never would have taken the flowers he gave her. Charlie never would have walked down the path with him that she did. The story really begins when they began their freshman year of college and got placed in nearly all of the same classes.

➽───────────────❥

Jake Edmondson. Possibly the only person I knew a bit at Brickton University. A little school about an hour south of London, bustling with people trying to earn their degrees and simply survive the tragically difficult exams the school administered. I looked around at orientation, trying to find someone to talk to, when I saw Jake.

I slid into the chair across from him, saying, "Hello, Jake."

"Hello, Charlie," he replied.

We made some small talk and then I stood up and walked over to another group. There were 4 people sitting together: a pretty blonde girl who smelled like fresh vanilla, a cute boy with floppy hair and round, silver glasses, and two other boys who kept making sex jokes towards each other.

"Hi, I'm Charlie. I moved here a couple months ago. I know nobody here. I don't speak British. The coffee's really good, though," I introduced myself to them.

"Haha, I fully agree with you on the coffee part. You have to try the cold brews at the shop two blocks down, I'll definitely bring you there sometime if you want," glasses boy answered.

"Noah, relax," the girl with the vanilla perfume standing next to him, intervened. "My name is Eleanor Parks, but please, call me Ellie. That's Noah Taylor. He's very annoying if you couldn't tell. I'm sorry in advance for how much he's going to hit on you."

"It's alright, I understand the British boy mind."

The other two guys started laughing, and one of them introduced himself as Louis Brown. The other stared at me, then the first thing he said was, "Do you want to help steal all of the mean-looking professor's socks in his sleep to fuck with him?"

"Theo!" Ellie exclaimed.

I immediately responded with "When and what time," and from that moment knew that we'd get along extremely well.

At that, we all moved over to a corner of the room and engaged in a conversation, laughing the entire time.

I didn't notice that Jake was staring at me from across the room.
