April...How it all began.
Kennedy Nicole Dasani. 16 years young. I have dark brown hair with blonde and light brown highlights. My eyes are an aqua blue with a tint of green. I am the type of girl who is free-spirited and care free. I stand up for my friends when I have to and I don't take crap from others. If you have a problem with me, shove it.
It happened late Thursday night around 8PM. I had finished my homework early that day so I could see the asteroid hit the moon. It was all over CNN and local news channels. Astronomers were everywhere saying how this is a 'once in a lifetime' thing. Gabe, my younger brother, was really excited to see what was gonna take place.
Mom had just pulled fresh muffins out of the oven when Gabe yelled to her, "IT'S HERE MOM! IT'S GONNA HIT THE MOON! HURRY!" mom had stopped everything she was doing and raced outside to see the phenomonon that was about to take place. Our neighbors gathered outside on their front porches and watched too.
As soon as I saw the asteroid, I got this funny feeling. A feeling that I can't describe. All I know, it was not a good, joyful feeling. It was, 'Oh no, I don't think this is gonna be good' scary feeling.
We watched the asteroid emerge from the foggy haze. As soon as we saw it, I heard a bunch of 'ooos and ahhhhs' erupt from our neighborhood.
The asteroid was BIG. I don't think the astronomers predicted it to be this big, becuase when it smashed into the moon, it shattered. Not completely, but into two peices. One big, and one small. The larger one fell towards earth. No, it didn't fall...it plumeted. As soon as it hit wherever it had, the electricity went out. I quick pulled my cell phone out and noticed that I had no signal.
"Mom, check your cell," I told her. She pulled out her phone and checked she had no signal as well.
"Great," I mumbled under my breath.
Gabe ran inside the house and flipped the TV on. Our TV still worked becuase we had one of those old-time TVs that just used antennas to power it. Gabe turned CNN on to see what astronomers were saying;
"A massive chunk has fallen from the moon and smashed into the Atlantic Ocean. Seismic waves have caused a massive earthquake in San Francisco. This has also erupted into huge tsunami waves reached over 125 feet high. This beats China's record that was set in 1886. Stay tuned for more news.. this is Sandra Feymer reporting for CNN nightly news."
"MOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!" Gabe and I scream at the same time.
"What? WHAT? What's wrong sweethearts?" mom rushes into the living room.
"Is Grandma OK? Huge earthquakes have hit San Fran with a huge tsunami wave mommy!" Gabe says all in one breath.
"I-I don't know..." mom rushes out of the room and comes back with an old 'track' phone.
She dialls Grandma's number over and over again. At least ever two minutes she makes a call. Grandma doesn't answer.
The line is dead.
No connection.
I don't know what to do at this point. Freak and run, or stay and fight this horrible ending.

Back to REAL world....
I awake to an unsettling feeling. A feeling when I know that something has changed. I quick pull on my jean shorts and throw on a cute "LIVE THE DREAM" American Eagle T-shirt. I race down stairs.
"Where's mom Gabe?" I ask as he finishes a bowl of cereal.
"I don't know," comes the reply. I rush outside and find her in the 'garden'. There is a thick mist covering the sky. It looks like ash.
"What's wrong with the sky mom?" I question her.
"Ash. Kennedy, we need to pick as many veggies as we can today, before they go bad. With no sunlight, means no veggetables. With no veggetables......" her words trail off and I am left only speechless.
"What happened last night while we slept?" I stare right into her used-to-be warm brown eyes. They are now filled with question and scaredness.
"Last night Kennedy, volcanoes erupted everywhere. I guess what little chunk of the moon was left, caused a gravity-reverse action on some land-forms, etc.,etc. In other words, magma from dormat and still active volcanoes is coming back up making the volcanoes explode," my jaw has probably hit rock bottom right now.
"Oh. Does that mean there are volcanoes erupting here? Do we have to evacuate as well? Maybe go farther down south like New Mexico?" I am so scared now. My legs are trembling and my lip is quivering.
"We do not have to evacuate. Calm down and take a deep breath. The volcanoes are hundreds of thousands of miles away from us. Becuase of the explosions though, ash has filtered itself through the air. We will need to stay inside as much as we can so our lungs don't become clogged. Dr. Ramerial came by this morning and said that the ash should be clearing up with in the next week or so. I sure hope he's right. He did warm me though, that that is not the least of our problems at the moment. Things could, will get much worse as we get later in the year," mom finishes.
That is if we make it that long.... I think to myself.
I don't know what to say.. I just turn on my heels and run. I don't know where or care. I just run. Run as if it is the only thing that will save this world. Run as if it is the only thing to save my life...
