Easton and I progressed together slowly. I never spent the night at his place and he rarely insisted that I stay. We would go on dates, mostly cheap ones that I could pay for. We didn't really talk about his family and he never asked me about mine. Until he suggested that we go out with Rose. She had come down to spend time with her fathers but wanted to see us as well.

I was nervous because of how my meeting with his dads had gone. I would be a fool for thinking that they hadn't talked about it, and my initial introduction to Rose hadn't been smooth as butter either. There was a lot of accusations flying out of my mouth.

But, when we saw Rose sitting at a small table at the pack restaurant, she immediately sprung out of her seat, her arms opening up. Easton went to her, hugging her back just as tightly. When they finally separated, she didn't hesitate, giving me a quick squeeze that would have suggested we were well acquainted.

"You look good," Easton complimented, shooting her a smile as we sat down.

"Thank you, so do you," Rose shot back with her beautiful smile. Despite the gap in between her two front teeth, her smile was no less radiant than Easton's.

"I've been trying a new work out. It helps me work through my stress," Easton explained and my ears pricked up. I had never heard him complain about his stress levels and I had never seen him work out either.

"Good, I'm glad. I know that you have had a fair amount of stressors lately. I have a new workout plan if you want me to send it to you, very cardio intensive though. I know you're more about weight training."

"I'd love to try it. It's nice to change it up every now and then."

Rose's eyes fell onto me and her smile resumed. "Do you go to the gym with him, Kaia?"

"Um, no, I don't," I replied, suddenly feeling embarrassed about it. I never had gone to any gym. I hadn't needed to. I was a siren for God's sake. I was designed to be perfection which meant that I would stay this size even if I ate fifteen burgers a day. Working out seemed like a waste of time. My power came from water, not my muscle mass.

"Well, if you ever decide to get into it, ask Easton for help. He's very supportive and motivational in the gym," she encouraged.

A friendly waitress appeared and we ordered our food, chatting idly as we waited. Well, Easton and Rose chatted while I just listened. They talked about happenings in the pack and brought up the royals, apparently the current queen was pregnant again which was a big cause for celebration. I felt like I was watching a television show that was already half way through the season. There were a million things that I should have understood but didn't.

"So what do your royals really do?" I wondered. Part of me wanted to keep my mouth shut. My first introduction to Rose had been rough at best. Maybe it would have been best if I had just kept my lips sealed and said nothing. But I had so many questions about their world.

"Keiko and Ajax pretty much monitor the alphas, make sure that everyone is staying in line," Easton answered. "They essentially have their own pack which is damn near an army and they enforce rules when people get out of line. They also have something called the royal tone which allows them to temporarily control their werewolf subjects."

I didn't know what answer I expected, but it wasn't that. What I heard was that there was a superior who oversaw all the doings in the werewolf community. And somehow, I had slipped under the radar. My sisters and I had all slipped under detection. There had been so many lives lost and no one had stepped in. All of the screams had gone unheard. All of the pleads for mercy would never be answered.

I had escaped because I had been lucky. Not because some high and mighty werewolf had rescued me.

"Kaia?" Easton hinted, making me realize that I was gripping a napkin in my hands, almost tearing it apart.
