The hallway was dark and ominous as we patrolled the lower floor of the school. The soft moonlight streaming through the gaps between the boarded-up windows provided the area with just enough light to safely guide us during our night watch together.
The silence between us was new, it was clear that she was still shaken from the events that had taken place in the karaoke room during our supply run two days prior… The loss of Jay didn’t exactly help lessen her growing anxiety either.
Her small frame appears so fragile and vulnerable, it looks as if she’d crumble from the slightest touch. The once bright and bubbly girl I came to know seems non-existent at this point. I’d give anything to see her smile whole-heartedly again, to see her beam from excitement once more, just like she did when she saw that claw machine.
Suddenly, I turned my head towards (Y/N). Her unexpected gasp snapping me out of my train of thought. My gaze follows hers to a zombie unusually close to the windows, it’s face dragging along the wooden boards.
As it came towards us, I notice a fairly wide gap in one of the windows, putting us in clear view of the monster. Too late to run away without initiating attention, I hastily grab (Y/N)’s arm, pinning her to the wall before placing my index finger upon her lips. As the zombie draws closer, I press my body against hers, shielding her frightened form while silently praying to blend into the walls as it moved past.
She continues to shake violently, clearly traumatised from the sight of them as she reaches out to wrap her arms around me. I look down surprised yet understanding of her actions and notice her trembling lips threatening to break out into a sob. I felt helpless, unable to console her while the zombie was still within earshot. However, as soon as it was out of sight, I was finally able to wrap my arms around her. I squeeze her tight, hoping to release all of her anxiety from a single embrace.
“It’s ok, it’s gone now… I’m here.” I whisper frantically.
I feel (Y/N) bury her face into my chest, her shaking now slowly subsiding within my hold. Blood rushes to the surface of my cheeks, unable to hide my affection from her dependency as I tighten our embrace. I wait patiently for her to calm down before she withdraws herself from my grasp. She looks up at me as I gently tuck a lock of hair behind her ear before wiping the tears threatening to escape from the sides of her beautiful (e/c) eyes. She grabs hold of my hand, keeping it placed against her flushed cheeks before leaning against my touch.
“Thank you, Eugene… For saving me that day too.” She whispered before finally flashing me the gorgeous smile I’ve come to miss dearly.
Overcome with utmost love for her, I lean in and place my lips upon hers bringing her in to a passionate kiss. I feel her arms wrap behind my neck as she pulls me closer, deepening the kiss. We both pull away, breathless yet smiling ear to ear.
“Thank you too.” I whisper as I place a light kiss on her knuckles.
“For what?” She questions, a puzzled expression gracing her face.
“For being here.”
Her face glows before tearing up again, this time from utter happiness. She embraces me again and I return the act immediately, chuckling into her soft (h/c) hair at her adorable reaction. When she looks up again, I kiss her once more and we stay in each other’s arms until the sunlight illuminates the once dark hallway, bringing light back into our day.
